A Great Business Week Article

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/09_16/b41270342...

A great article discussing the business climate in Mexico in comparison to China and other global locations. However, the great part of this article has to do with the violence and where it is limited too. Also on page 3 is a section dicussing Mexicalli. Also there is a great podcast that discusses the article with the author of of the story.

A good read

Interesting article. Obviously, the cost of labor alone is not the guiding force. Face it, When Asian companies such as Lenovo, Samsung and LG put factories in Mexico, it is because of other issues.

Namely geography...Mexico is closer to the US Market and corporate administration types.

I had to laugh when the article said that Cetys was doubling it's number of engineering students. An excellent grade for an upper division level class at Cetys goes for about 100 bucks .. or less if you have negotiating skills. I don't know of any university in Mexico where you can't still buy grades - even Monterry Tech. Point being that Mexico isn't even on the same plantet as Taiiwan or Korea when it comes to education or the tech savvy folks required to keep a plant running

Actually the maquiladora industry started in Mexicali in the 60's.

The Nelson family had a retail store in TJ where the Nelson Hotel is now (1st and rebo) pre wwII. They imported many items from Asia. After the war they maintained good relations with their Asian contacts and that led to the idea of
setting up manufacturing plants along the border for the US market.
