for those who fta, how much have you spent in (whatever) time frame for fta equipment and how much do you think you saved?
Right now, a full boat subscription plus watching all the ppv's would probably run you about $130 a month....... x 12 months........x7 years= $10,920
expenditure --- <$700
I like that ratio-
just realized who the previous poster is.....
Sorry, 'tech........didn't mean to hurt your biz------

Hours spent downloading and installing cracks... "Priceless!"
No prob. Doesn't hurt our business.
Might be more to it than simple economics. We set up a lot of accounts for former FTA users who either get tired of chasing the latest "crack o' the
week" or maybe they feel just a little guilty about it...?
I dunno, but every time there's another ECM, our phone starts ringing...

TV Games
Since I have NO firsthand experience with ANY Illegal TV "Testing", I can only ASSUME that a part of it is the Challenge. Most of these "Testers" who
Crack the Codes are doing it for free and distributing it simply for the satisfaction.
AND, there "Might" be people out there who don't rely on it for their steady TV diet, BUT use it as a resource to download and record PPV and Premium
Channel Offerings. As such, it does have a favorable cost benefit.
I'm simply ASSUMING that COULD be the case since I have NO personal knowledge of such.
I'm just one of those ENQUIRING Minds.

I just feel like it's a total monopoly and "they" are ripping EVERYONE off!
When you consider you can't get a basic account with a couple extras (like the Travel Channel) for less than $45 a month................$45 a month x
?????????????????million customers.............
How much does it cost to maintain a freeking satellite? Honestly if it was somewhere in the neighborhood of $20-$25 a month, yea, no problem, no
griping.....
But I just feel like the TV distribution companies are ripping off ALL their customers. I feel the same way about cell phone companies, but THAT's a
whole other thread!
Of course, ...........WE pay for our TV signal, I only know this because I have FRIENDS who use fta...........

ps- sfbob-
the signal is in the air, THEY put it there and bombard the world with it. Kinda like the water in the ground. I didn't put it there, but if I were
to spend the money on a pump, I could have all the water I could ever need.

Probably don't know what I am talking about, but don't sat and cable providers pay to the content providers a rather hefty fee for every channel of
programming they carry? I also thought that one of the reasons testing has become such a hobby in Latin America was that Dish et al cannot legally
sell subscriptions outside the U.S....or so their web site says.
So, tech gurus of the netherworld...educate an oldlady.

Dishnet and Direct TV will not, or can not do business in Mexico. You would still have to lie, cheat and steal to bring their equipment down here to
use....illegally. So what's the big deal?
I know: Tell them you are putting it on an RV and touring the world. I think they have heard that one before.
When they really get upset is when you tell them you have 10 bedrooms and need boxes for each of them, and then you sell or rent them to your friends
and neigbors.
So FTA, or illegal Dishnet or Direct...What's the difference?
Like the mans says: "I'll quit watching it when they take that damn signal out of my back yard." And they are really trying.

Good lord. Where have you gone Joe Dimaggio a nation turns it weary head to you........ buy the way, the reason Directv and Dish don't sell outside of
the USA is because others hold the programming rights in Mexico. They sort of have a program of don't ask don't tell. By the way, I think Don Julio
Real is over priced at $300.00 a bottle so should I have my kids steal it ?????????? Come on get real you cheap SOB's

$1 to $3 billion to build and launch a satellite. Replace every 10 to 15 years. (so assume someone spent $3 to 9 billion to build and launch 3
satellites at 110°, 119° and 129°)

$81 million to build a satellite operations center

How much to run a satellite operations center annually? How would I know? ;>

BTW, the telephone and electrical utility lines are probably in the air over your yard as well, so I say have at it.
Who says there's no such thing as a "Free Launch?"

Not sure who you are referring to here as an SOB, but in staying with your analogy (of sorts)....you can send your teens to the store with $300 but
if they are under age they can't legally buy it. If I got that right you are saying that some people pay money monthly to break the law while others
bet that their up front purchase of equipment is a more cost effective methodology for breaking the law. Nah...I must have misunderstood.

And you have a CHOICE to buy other types of booze at a lot less than $300 a bottle. You probably have over 100 choices just in that one category.
What other CHOICE is there for TV????? Huh? I'm waiting........ Tell me another OPTION?!?!? Not a good comparison, you gotta do better than
that.
It's not whether someone is too CHEAP to pay for it, but is what you are getting worth what you are paying?
How much are you paying for tv 'sfBOB? Are you getting your monies worth?
It's a monopoly..............it's happened before..........
and yes there are options for electricity, (solar, which is used very often in our region of Washington state)
and Magicjack/skype which is so often touted as a good phone option.....
and Hulu...................but Hulu does not broadcast local networks......
so you can watch reruns of LawAndOrder, but you can't watch local news stations.

for all the posts I've read about ................"how to get thisorthat across the border"..........or "how to get out of mordida with a smile"....a
satellite signal should be the LEAST of anyone's moral concerns!

Actually Alan, if you leave it to private enterprise, apparently a lot less ..

Morality In The Eye of the Beholder.
I've found in my life's journey that almost EVERYONE I've ever met has a FLEXIBLE sense of Morality versus Legality. As with most other concerns,
they consider "Some" illegal acts immoral while others are OK. The most commonplace are attention to traffic laws, civil codes and tax codes.
Although I have always been one of those "pragmatic" moralists, I do remain ready to accept criticism from the first person I KNOW who Follows ALL of
the legal rules of society without variance. I'm sure that SOMEWHERE Out There is the person who can cast that first Stone.
To my knowledge I, Like Diogenes, haven't yet met that person.
Many years ago, I went with a friend who needed to get his DISH card recoded in San Felipe. Arriving there, I was surprised to find a policeman
standing in front of his unit. Going inside, there were two SF Policemen. I asked the vendor what was going on and he said "That's the Police Chief
and his Bodyguard. He's here to get his card re-programmed".

Interesting.
ViaSat's $400 million is the build cost only. Still gotta get the satellite launched up there somehow...
BTW, I believe Telnor is private enterprise.
