A different DirecTV question

Brought down a new, legal box and card and hooked it up to the existing 1mtr dish which has been used for a few years with a pirate card. With the old card/box all programs were received with no problem, including Network stations. With the new legal box, everything works including HBO and Sports packages, but not the local/network stations. The bar on the top of the screen announces the station number and call sign, but no picture. Others here (Todos Santos) have legal boxes with local/network stations from LA and have no problems. Mine is from the Central Coast and another friend has local stations from Phoenix and has the same problem. He had a "technician" over who tried tuning the dish signal but still couldn't get a picture. I called DirectTV and got the box "zapped" again, but still no go.

Questions no one here seems to know the answers to are - Do the local stations come out of a different satellite and need a different dish adjustment? Is there some kind of "foot print" that the local stations have that can't be received if outside that footprint?

Has anyone else experienced this problem and been able to correct it? Some of us here would really appreciate any advice or tips on getting this worked out. Thanks, BK

If the satellite you are aligned on is the same as the U.S. then,
of course, the Networks are on the same satellite.

My experience (legal and otherwise) is with Dish Network, not
DirecTV, but Dish has for quite awhile now been moving local
network packages to "Spotbeam" transponders on their newer satellites
which are focused on that particular city. The spotbeams have a
150 mile radius around the focal point. In the U.S. I can receive
San Diego and Fresno, among others, with no problem. However, in
Baja I can't get the Fresno and get the San Diego only at times.
On the Dish, though, you get an error message which states that you
are outside your authorized viewing area.

When you subscribe you are allocated local channels in relation to your home/billing address. They are "spotbeamed" so unless you are relatively close or overlap another local market you will only recieve the locals you are subscribed to.

Moving your reciever out of the local area means that you cannot receive the spotbeamed locals and as your card is programmed only to recieve these locals, you would not receive new ones unless you changed your address with DTV.

Of course since there is no local DTV market in Baja and it is illegal to recieve sat service there you are, as they say, SOOL.

local channels

We live in the Central Coast of CA, have a legal subscription to Directv and are subscribed to the local channels via satellite. We require a 3 LNB oval dish because there are two satellites servicing our plan. When I use the single round dish, I cannot get local channels, but with the oval dish I can. I can reoriente the round dish to the other satellite and get the local ones, but not the other programming. Since the local channels are usually not worth watching I aimed the dish to the original satellite only (and we have a tree between us and the more western satellite). Play with the antenna aiming function and signal level and try different transponders. The new satellite is for HDTV too and requires a "tilt" adjustment with the oval dish. Let us know what you eventually find out.

Thanks everyone for the info - It really helped. Turned out that because of where we live on the Central Coast (Cambria), we are eligible to receive both the LA and NY feeds for all the networks except NBC which is broadcast locally from San Luis Obispo - We would have to get written permission from them to change. As it turns out, you have to have a signal score that will qualify you to receive these feeds - You can get your score off the DirecTV web site. You enter your zip code and it will display your scores for all the networks. Also, you can either get the feed from LA for a dollar something or both LA and NY for 2 bucks or so for each channel. They also don't take away your existing local channels so you retain all those plus the network feeds. Not a bad deal. We'll just have to get along without Katie and Mat while were in Baja! BK

NETWORK CHANNELS

Ditto problem. I wanted national network channels, and for that you need a waiver from the local affiliates under FCC rules - unanimous refusal reported by DirecTV.

The other route I am now pursuing is to get the RV package for those who are in a HUD-defined RV and are on the road - they do not have a local network channel. In this case an affidavit of use of box (in RV) is required for the national feed of the network channels.

Bruce

Please tell him hello. He poured the floor for our house in TS many years ago (across from the Jardine de Ni?os on road to Punta Lobos). Sold since, heard he is doing well. Thanks.
