Shipping to Baja

Well, I will never cease to wonder at how things work here. I got the word from home, (Los Barriles), that they really want to throw an annversery party to celebrate one year of "Galeria Los Angeles" and All Saints Day on Nov. 1st, and when was I going to ship the new inventory that I have been postponing doing for the last two months. Opps!!

So, feeling pretty sheepish and hopeless that it could ever arrive there on time, I promised them that I would get packing and send the shippment no later than last Wednesday. One all nighter and I finally got all the goodies bubble wrapped and in their baskets ready to go.

So, I did one more run around Oaxaca trying to decide which would be the most reasonable and reilable shipper. Big difference in cost were given by the 5 different shippers that I asked; Shipping quotes ranged from $1,600 pesos per a basket to $1,300 pesos for all 3 baskets, which I estimated would all togeather weigh in at about 50 kilos total.

Shipping time quoted was 3 to 5 days to ship by truck. Ah huh, yeah sure I thought, how guilable do these guys think I am, I wasn't born yesterday after all, how many years have I been down here. I mean really, if the baskets make it to Los Barriles in two weeks, in time for the grand fiesta, it will be more than I could ever imagine or ask for.

So, I decided to go with Areo Flash, their quote was low, they were very personable, and only two blocks from where I am living, so I figured if the baskets take more than 10 days, they would be an easyaccess for me to nag, jeje. Again they promised the stuff would arrive in 3 days max. What ever, you guys, I thought.

Anyway, where I am going with this is; the cost was less than the quote, as the baskets weighed in 5 kilos less than I estimated. AND, the packages ARRIVED IN La Paz on Friday, I had shipped Wednesday afternoon, in just 48 hours, WOW!!!!!!!

For sure, they had to have air freighted them, no way could they drive them from Oaxaca to Mazatlan and than cross on the ferry in that amount of time.

Got word from home that the kids picked up the baskets in La Paz on Saturday, unpacked yesterday, and only one clay pot was broken. I would estimate of the 45 kilos sent, 40 kilos were breakable goods. I am sitting here with my mouth open in amazment, truly it is a new world!

Post note

After I wrote the above yesterday, I went to AreoFlash to give them my most profound thank you's for their great service.

I used the opportunity to bring up my doubt that they shipped by land instead of
by air, and they assured me I was wrong. We did the math, 5 hrs. from Oaxaca to Mexico City, etc. and well, it is possible, they can actually move it all the way from Oaxaca to La Paz, B.C.S.
by truck in 48 hours, just unbelievable even when experiense proves me wrong, I am still shaking my head in disbelief......
