Leonid meteor shower tonight/tomorrow am

Hi all,

A reminder that the leonids will be happening this evening (morning of the 17th) for us here on the west coast. Peak times are supposed to be 12:30-2:30. Asia is much more favored this year but it still might be worth a look!
Heres a guide:

Here's a site that you can compute the best times to watch at your location.

Unimpressive, so far. I'm seeing about 10-12/hr. I'm going back to bed and getting up at 5 and seeing if it improves.

I just walked out on the patio here in Coyote Bay for a quick look. Within just a few minutes...5 at the most.. I saw one flashing east, then an instant later, another zooming west...pretty nice sightings.

However, it's a cold 58 degrees out there! Too much of a temp change in the last week..from 90 to brrrrrr..

I'm putting on a sweater and heading back out after a hot cup of joe.

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

I've seen a few..................this was a disappointment.

52 over here, Roger, but I am about a mile from the water.

Got up at 5:30... looked out the sliding glass door from inside (too cold outside... even to get into our hot tub)... watched for a minute, nada in the north sky... back into bed for me!

Agreed an unimpressive showing! Not like the 2001 pass of the Temple tuttle debris stream! But jeez 58, & 52 is cold, it was 37 here in the Sierra last night!

Heres a pic of one greenish meteor, done by a collegue back in Canada:

http://www.steveirvine.com/astro/leonid17xi09.html

The perseids were a fair bit better!

Shari:

Check out this website, apparently green colour is associated with meteors that have high magnesium content (but its also that cameras are more sensitive to colour in general than our eyes)

http://leonid.arc.nasa.gov/meteor.html

This photo was taken the same night as the Leonids, its actually not a leonid but is a fireball seen in Oakhill Ontario. Apparently it was almost too bright to look at and fragmented into many pieces.
