You just never know....
Had a 7:30am appointment today for my semi-annual teeth cleaning and at the appointed time I present myself only to be told that the remoras were late
and anyway, my appointment is at 8:10 and why don't I go around the corner and have a cup of coffee and return then? OK.
I'm sitting at the counter, ham and diced eggs and just nailing the crossword, in ink I might add, when this older gentleman wonders in and sits 2
seats over and marvels at my hubris for using a pen. I shrug, trying to play it cool. He orders decaf and mentions that when he used to go to his
place in Mexico he would always bring a crossword book with him. Mexico, I say, where is your place. Was, he says, in the Yucatan. I say I've got a
place in Baja. He says BOLA?. Why yes, says I. He then launches into tale after tale of going to San Felipe in the 40s as a kid, getting drunk and
going to the Casas de Gato, taking 2 days to drive from SF to BOLA along the coast until the storm washed out the road. Caught so many totuava that
they would collapse in exhaustion. Swore you could turn west from Puertecitos and get to the main hiway. Talked of landing in BOLA in cross winds so
bad you lined up at about a 30 degree angle and a the very last moment straightened out and then immediately on de-planing getting lots of drinks at
Papa's to recover.
This goes on for 20 minutes until my phone alarm goes off and I excuse myself and take off for the dentist. I was so late I never even asked his
name. Who was that man?

Your Random Encounter
Is more interesting than listening to some stranger talk about his golf game.
BTW, ink pen with crossword puzzles - you like to live on the edge, yay!

wow how interesting. i hope you see him again. bet he has endless tales.
i can identify with the cross winds coming off the sea at beach strips.
once in 1983 i made 3 attempts to put down my camp gear loaded Mooney at Punta Bufeo landing to the north over the bluff to the south. Had to chop and
drop once cleared.
had my controls fully crossed trying to stay straight and keep a wing down.
3rd try we did it but i was prepared to waive off and go elsewhere if that one became a go around again.
my wife was not a happy aircamper that day.
plane was safety rated at 18 kts max x wind. that day i'll wager the x wind was more like 30.
