well Tony - here it is in a nut's shell....

Hey! It has worked for me so far!!! |
Lightning doesn't actually "strike" in a downwardly direction. The earth smites thee from below.
It is a phenomena whereby a potential storage of electrical energy can no longer abstain from alowing it's electrons to flow to an area that has a
differential potential of/for storage. DC, or current flow wants to always move in a one way direction.
the earth is a gigantic storage of potential energy as a ground source and in a field. When conditions are right - a mass of electrons will jump out
of the earth's field (including tree tops which via roots are connected to the earth) and flow to an air mass which is in an attraction mode due to an
opposite static state and potential differential. Like a big honking wet cloud.
and yes - this is all theory and no one has proved a damn thing but i'll go with Ohm's law any day for now.
and - lightning rods are discharging energy from their grounds to the sky, not receiving energy. If the rods weren't there the discharge from the
earth might occur at any point of a structure close to the other potential source - the wet sky - so the roof un protected could just explode and
catch fire as the earth's electrons try to jump up through it.
this is the weirdest chite i have heard in school for my PV solar contracting certification - can any BSEEs or electricians in the audience comment on
this.

That's probably why you see so many buildings with their roofs blown off. No lightning rods.
Give me a break !!

Thanks Mike! It does seem to defy common sense and run counter to all we have been taught, though. There certainly hasn't been much media reporting of
this. I will keep an open mind and try to grok it.
I will not try to invalidate this theory because, what do I know? I can do skeptical really well though. That is a worthy retirement practice
which only gets better with age (and expounding on The BajaNomad)
Jeez...I just left Berkeley with no time to spare. This big storm has just hit. I could've been killed in the Devil's lowland. Now I am safely
ensconced back in my mountain top cabin in The Sierras where it has started to snow.

Mike- Don't confuse members of the flat earth society with any scientific facts. They are still too busy trying to de-bunk the moon landings to
contemplate any new data.

It's a theory, like they said. Lots of maybes.
It is interesting the electric fields in clouds are not large enough to account for the energy contained within lightning and the the NaI (sodium
iodide) crystals register ionizing electomagnetic radiation at the location of the discharge, explained as a result of cosmic electrons both
initiating the discharge and creating x-rays as they decelerate.

Skeet,
I'm about 12 miles above Nevada City, north of Sacramento and south of Lake Tahoe. My elevation is 3800'. I'm on the backside of Scott's Flat Lake.
It's the "Gold Country".

And I thought it was Rick Perry who ran Texas. And he probably is a Baptist.

time during summer monsoon T storms when they allow a discharge path up thru the structure because they DON"T have a grounding rod at the top (roof)
closest to the available potential differential charge - wet unstable air.
and something else - concrete footings and stems are highly conductive - basically a concrete bldg foundation, even CMU block, acts like a huge flow
thru conductor for DC.
so - a bldg is sitting in the ground accumulating potential DC and lets it go upwards to a receptor through the least resistive path. Living things
are a conductor. wood and trees are all conductors to a degree.
this is rocket science. do not attempt to debunk it!!

Very good Info!
As an Adjuster in the 60"s I had one Lightning Claim. On mono Street in Fresno Calif.{North west side}
At that time I was wondering why the 2x4 studs slit in a manner showing upward force. Later when I found that it was coming up out of the Ground I
understood.
This house had two side walls blown apart about 6 inches, then it went to the rafters and misplaced a small part of the roof then up and Away..
Later on i read some reorts on Lightning /strikes of Aircraft around Ft. Worth Texas that were deadly.

Then my grandma was right, after all. She used to tell us that the rubber golashes [sp?] she always wore when sitting in her rocking chair prevented
the rays that come from under the house from electrocuting her.
