I will be riding dirt bike into the mission sometime around Feb1-3 while spending a few days exploring Catavina boulder fields and coastal road....the
pictures provided on this mission ride thread have been helpful in my anticipation of some conditions.....thanks to you and others for that
info....

Sure, you are welcome... Want a tough trials type challenge? Try and see how you do on the El Camino Real towards Gonzaga... In my http://vivabaja.com/msm page, I give the GPS and photo for where it leaves the road, almost 2 miles from the mission.... it goes up the steep hill
to the left, northwest (before the auto road climbs the final rocky grade to where it ends). Then once on top of the ridge, the ECR swings around to
the east and parallels the canyon on the ridge as it heads to the desert floor to the southeast.
I only know of one rider to use it both directions, Kevin Ward... and he did damage his ride in doing so.
About my truck... the lease was in it final year on the '05, and Toyota was making some special good deals for us Tacoma owners to trade up to a 2010.
My 2005 had 102,000+ miles on it, but was in otherwise good condition... Toyota resale value far exceeds other makes, I serviced the truck as
recommended, my credit is good, and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse... So, I transferred to a new truck (sticker price $32k) with no money
down and only $20 more per month than what I was paying already.

#2) Yep, that's the kind of logic I used to justify a new third bike....need the right tool for a specific application.....now we are both happier

For how many will be a problem to meet at the San Ysidro-TJ border on Feb-12(friday) to caravan from there or how many would like to meet us in Rancho
Santa Ynez...
The dates untill now are.
Leave on Feb-12 , be on the Mission site by Feb-13, possibly leave the mission site on Feb-14(Sunday), if everything goes to plan.Drive to El Rosario
to stay for the night, and then on Monday we can have breakfast and do a quick trip to Las Pintas... or maybe La Lobera... If you guys have any ideas
that will be great too...

In Baja, I don't like to go by the time and never wear a watch! However, if there is going to be a crunch on the time available to do this, perhaps an
examination of the real time on the road is needed?
All in this caravan will be at Rancho Santa Ynez by 9 am, if they aren't already there from the night before (Tijuana to Santa Ynez 6-7 hours.)
At Santa Ynez: Say we get loaded up Saturday morning and on the mission road by 9-10 am (after breakfast, loading the tent and sleeping bags, etc.)
Then we will be at the mission between noon and 1 pm (if there are no mechanical problems).
It gets dark early, still in Feb. so that leaves setting up camp and relax time to about 3 hours (1-4 pm)... if there are no mechanical/ four wheeling
problems going in.
If some people want to leave the next morning, well that's up to them. If others want to spend just one day enjoying the best off-the-beaten-trac site
in Baja, then they could stay until Monday.
Mission Santa Maria back to the border will be about 10 hours (if no problems). If you have to get back Monday night, but don't want to rush on Monday
or drive at night through the border region, then leaving Sunday for El Rosario might be good... for a more relaxed Monday trip north.
Perhaps some will drive out Sunday (mid-day or sooner) and others Monday and head all or part way back Monday... some may be able to cross on Tuesday
to avoid any holiday traffic at the border... or just go at a more relaxed state.
Leaving the mission on Sunday for Hwy. 1, and then trying to get in a side trip to Las Pintas http://vivabaja.com/pintas (4 hrs. min. drive and explore time from Hwy. 1) is pushing it, without any night driving and then finding a room in El
Rosario... or setting up camp, etc.
Have fun for sure... The Santa Maria trip alone will be enough to fill your night with many Baja, four wheeling dreams... for years... You will want
to go back (if you can get out, that is)! I have been there three times... and look forward to more!

I am up for it. I talked to my wife about it and she is too, especially if a group is going. I have been there before and have always wanted to
return. Now that being said, I am also doing a photographic road trip with a friend (he is the photographer) right before. As of now I am not sure if
I can swing it back to back. I will stay tuned.

You are right, but my truck is a single cab. I can carry a ton of gear, but in the cab, either my wife or Dan will fit, but not both. Three is quite a
crowd. Given the options, as good as a friend as Dan is, my wife is far better. No matter, my wife has a long, rich education, history and experience
in photography. I know she would like it.

Some guy just made this trip a few weeks ago in a LOBO (F-150) 4X4 4 DOOR when down and up the widomaker no problem, he only said that have good tires
and be prepare to scratch the pain in your truck...
