must you hear to keep in touch with the everchanging sands, or the tops of the pines, or the sunrises over Chivato, while you're away?
"the seashores of old mexico" keeps me sane......
'specially the version with Willie Nelson, TAMBIEN!
I left, out of Tucson, with no destination in mind.
I was runnin' from trouble and the jail-term the Judge had in mind.
And the border meant freedom, a new life, romance,
And that's why I thought I should go,
And start my life over on the seashores of old Mexico.
My first night in Juarez, lost all the money I had.
One bad senorita made use of one innocent lad.
But I must keep on runnin'; it's too late to turn back:
I'm wanted in Tucson, I'm told.
Yeah, an' things'll blow over on the seashores of old Mexico.
Two Mexican farmers en route to a town I can't say,
Let me ride on the back of a flatbed half-loaded with hay.
Down through Durango, Colima, Almiera,
Then in the Manzanillos,
Where I slept on the seashores of old Mexico.
After one long siesta, I came wide awake in the night.
I was startled by someone who shadowed the pale moonlight.
My new-found companion, one young senorita,
Who offered a broken hello,
To the gringo she found on the seashores of old Mexico.
She spoke of Sonora and swore that she'd never return,
For her Mexican husband, she really had no great concern.
'Cause she loved the gringo, my red hair and lingo:
That's all I needed to know.
Yeah, I found what I needed on the seashores of old Mexico.
Yeah, she loved the gringo, my red hair and lingo:
That's all I needed to know, ha, ha.
Yeah, I found what I needed on the seashores of old Mexico.
Come on, baby, don't you wanna go
Way down south, talkin' 'bout Mexico
Straight through the jungle, out to the sea
We'll have some fun if you fly away with me
Like some old movie in black and white
We'll fall in love in the middle of the night
Chorus:
Me and you, down in Veracruz
Do what you wanna do, down in Veracruz
Come on, baby, don't you wanna come
In the town, people movin' to the drums
Rosa's Cantina, it never stops
Drinkin' cerveza, people party 'til they drop
Forget the laundry, forget the rain
We'll get to heaven on the seven-thirty plane
I can feel a chill of a cold November wind
Here in Oklahoma that means it is wintertime again
Every time I think about the rain and sleet and snow
I start dreamin' about siestas underneath this sombrero
Baby if youre good to go well go down to Mexico
Get a place in Cabo, kick back in the sand
Itll be just you and me and moonlight dancing on the sea
To Spanish guitar melody of a mariachi band
I got two tickets bought
There wont be no second thought
Weather's always nice down there in paradise
Well find that little man who owns that taco stand
Well be drinkin' margaritas while were workin' on our tan
Baby if youre good to go well go down to Mexico
Get a place in Cabo, kick back in the sand
If you'll get off that telephone and put your shorts and sandals on
Tomorrow well be dancing to a mariachi band
Cancun dont get me high
Thats where the snow birds fly
They like to winter there
Then they come from everywhere
Ill take the Baja sun
It aint overrun
With the gringos and the touristas
We might be the only ones
Baby if youre good to go well go down to Mexico
Get a place in Cabo, kick back in the sand
Itll be just you and me and moonlight dancing on the sea
To Spanish guitar melody of a mariachi band

β John Steinbeck, Log from the Sea of Cortez
And a little James Taylor --- even though it says he has never been---still one of my old favorites.
Way down here you need a reason to move
Feel a fool running your stateside games
Lose your load, leave your mind behind, Baby James
Oh, Mexico
It sounds so simple I just got to go
The sun's so hot I forgot to go home
Guess I'll have to go now
"Americano" got the sleepy eye
But his body's still shaking like a live wire
Sleepy "Seρorita" with the eyes on fire
Oh, Mexico
It sounds so sweet with the sun sinking low
Moon's so bright like to light up the night
Make everything all right
Baby's hungry and the money's all gone
The folks back home don't want to talk on the phone
She gets a long letter, sends back a postcard; times are hard
Oh, down in Mexico
I never really been so I don't really know
Oh, Mexico
I guess I'll have to go
Oh, Mexico
I never really been but I'd sure like to go
Oh, Mexico
I guess I'll have to go now
Maybe not the song to make you think of the sunrise/sunset at Chivato, but takes me back to some of my former trips south....
Mas Tequila
Sammy Hagar
All right now, here we go ...
Now we're gonna tell you a little story
About the way we like to party - take ya on a trip!
HIT IT!
That's right
I'm goin' way down south where the big blue agave grow,
Takin' a weekend trip down to Baja, Mexico!
Where you can drink the water, but don't ya eat the ice,
Take your vitamin "T" with salt 'n lemon slice ...
I say,
One shot...Hey! Mas Tequila-
Two shots...Hey, Hey! que veneno-
Three shots...Arriba! Mas Tequila!
Hey! Hey!
She did a mean macarena to the funky cold medina
Behind a body shot and three margaritas.
She'll drink it straight from the bottle, terra cotta jug,
From a boda bag coppin' a major buzz.
I say,
One shot...Hey! Mas Tequila-
Two shots...Hay, Hey! que veneno-
Three shots...Arriba! Mas Tequila!
Hey! Hey!
Uno mas, bartender...one more...mas tequila!
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!
Yo can drink the water, but don't ya eat the ice;
Take your vitamin "T" with salt 'n lemon slice!
I say,
One shot...Hey! Mas Tequila-
Two shots...Hey, Hey! que veneno-
Three shots...Arriba! Mas Tequila!
Hey! Hey!
One shot...Hey! more tequila!
Two shots...Hey! que veneno!
Three shots...Ay yi yi yi yi ...
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Mas Tequila!
No mas, no mas ....

Tequila smile and a mango kiss
They've never seen rain quite like this
Give the storm a name watch her blow
She's outside with a sweet surprise
You can't stop her when her waters rise
Open up the door let her flow
Ten Years in Mexico
Watch them come and I watch them go
Where the time went I don't know
Life and death joy and tears
Ten Years In Mexico
I still remember every step so well
Through the graveyard to the cheap hotel
Knowing any moment I might fall
Still a notion in senora's eyes
She sees the ocean and the dragon flies
From the hacienda hear her call
Ten Years in Mexico
Watch them come and I watch them go
Where the time went I don't know
Life and death joy and tears
Ten Years In Mexico
I ain't learned much
But I learned that love is all
And I learned to count
To ten en espanol
Last night I dreamed of ice and sleet
I dreamed of sidewalks underneath my feet
Woke to find my suitcase by the door
I ask the mountains and the Cortez Sea
How did she come to love a fool like me
But I don't really need the answer any more
Ten Years in Mexico
Watch them come and I watch them go
Where the time went I don't know
Life and death joy and tears
Ten Years In Mexico

I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here
Elvis Presley (from the movie "Fun In Acapulco")
No-one's in a hurry
No-one seems to worry
Why they're all so happy is very clear
Every day siesta, every night fiesta
I think I'm gonna like it here
All this lovely scenery
There's more to it than greenery
I know a chance for romance is always near
Mission bells are ringing, everybody's singing
I think I'm gonna like it hear
The sound of laughter from every doorway
Sweet music floating across the square
It seems to say things are going better
Your troubles like bubbles will soon disappear in the air
Down to my last peso, but I'm not afraid to say so
I feel just like a brave, Spanish cavalier
I don't care where we go, so lead on' mi amigo'
I think I'm gonna like it here
Melodias.....lapieras
Your troubles like bubbles will soon disappear in the air
Down to my last peso, but I'm not afraid to say so
I feel just like a brave, Spanish cavalier
I don't care where we go, so lead on' mi amigo'
I think I'm gonna like it here

Down in Mexicali
There's a crazy little place that I know
Where the drinks are hotter than the chili sauce
And the boss is a cat named Joe
He wears a red bandana, plays a blues pianna
In a honky-tonk, down in Mexico
He wears a purple sash, and a black moustache
In a honky-tonk, down in Mexico
Well, the first time that I saw him
He was sittin' on a piano stool
I said "Tell me dad, when does the fun begin?"
He just winked his eye and said "Man, be cool."
He wears a red bandana, plays a blues pianna
In a honky-tonk, down in Mexico
He wears a purple sash, and a black moustache
In a honky-tonk, down in Mexico
All of a sudden in walks this chick
Joe starts playing on a Latin kick
Around her waist she wore three fishnets
She started dancin' with the castanets
I didn't know just what to expect
She threw her arms around my neck
We started dancin' all around the floor
And then she did a dance I never saw before.
So if you're south of the border
I mean down in Mexico
And you wanna get straight,
Man, don't hesitate
Just look up a cat named Joe.
He wears a red bandana, plays a blues pianna
In a honky-tonk, down in Mexico
He wears a purple sash, and a black moustache
In a honky-tonk, down in Mexico
Yeah, como esta usted senorita
Come with me to the border, south of the border, that is
In Mexico, yeah in Mexico
You can get your kicks in Mexico
Come with me baby, come with me, come with me, crazy, yeah
When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.

For me it's "They all went to Mexico" by Willie Nelson and Santana
Where's my pal, where's my friend
All good things must have an end
Sad things and nothings
On and on they go
I guess he went to Mexico
Chorus:
They all went to Mexico
Buenas dias, got to go
Tengo que obedecer
Mi corazon
They all went to Mexico
Where's my mule, where's my dray
Straw hat's packed up and gone
away
Mule don't go north and dray go slow
They both went to Mexico
Where's my sweetie, where's the face
That lit dark corners every place
She put up with me long time you know
And then she had to go to Mexico
Chorus
Wheres my brown dog, where's my hound
He liked my truck he hung around
But he's a canine romeo
And I guess he went to Mexico
Where's that woman so sweet, so mean
Her heart was cautious her mind was keen
She was always looking for the peccadillo
I hope she went to Mexico
Chorus
Where's December's happy crew
With German bikes and sidecars too
They take the truck south to St. Louis, MO
Motorcycle all the way to Mexico
Where's my luck, where's my grace
Has it all been just a foolish chase
Every time I hear that rainy chill wind blow
I think it might be time to head to Mexico
Whenever I hear that rainy, chill wind blow. I think it may be time to head for Mexico. Tengo que obedecer mi corazon!
I love listening to ZZ Top singing:
Lets drive that ol' Chrysler down to Mexico...
Oh, this is going to be SO good
And the Indigo Girls singing:
Everywhere I turn, all the beauty just keeps on shaking me...
I'm running, to the end of the earth
I'm swimming, to the edge of the sea
I'm laughing, I'm under a starry sky
This world was meant for me...
And Lyle Lovett (a Baja traveler) singing about riding "across the border"; "to learn the ways of love":

I must look a mess I must admit
But I have been travelling quite a bit
South of the Border
Where the law and order
Is kept by Federales who just grin
And tell you they just want to be your friend
I left for Tampico last July
I jumped off that boat I almost died
There to greet us
Were pretty senoritas
I swore that I would not go home then
All those lovely ladies were my friends
Whoa, those sweet chiquitas they don't pretend
-- Spoken: "Como esta, Capitain..."
That is all I really want to say
I was thrown out of the country yesterday
See I was, drinkin' double
Causin' lots of trouble
When the man looked in the window of the bar and he grinned
And said, "If you come back we just may not be your friend"
"I don't want to see you 'round here again"
"If you come back next time we may not pretend" (Hidy ho' boys!)
Whenever I hear that rainy, chill wind blow. I think it may be time to head for Mexico. Tengo que obedecer mi corazon!
Once, in the 1990's, drove 30 hours strait when returning from a La Ventana windsurfing trip and listened to the album over and over on the ride home.
It's amazing what the Baja Desert will compel you to do when your driving alone.
Highlights of the trip included giving a Federali a four hour ride up to GN, running out of gas at sunset because the previous gas station had burnt
down, and then having to buy gas from Bandito's.
I think this one qualifies because of the line-
"all of the ISLANDS and all of the HIGHLANDS "
By: Jimmy Buffett
1977
I took off for a weekend last month
Just to try and recall the whole year
All of the faces and all of the places
Wonderin' where they all disappeared
I didn't ponder the question too long
I was hungry and went out for a bite
Ran into a chum with a bottle of rum
And we wound up drinkin all night
Chorus:
It's these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of our running and all of our cunning
If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane
Reading departure signs in some big airport
Reminds me of the places I've been
Visions of good times that brought so much pleasure
Makes me want to go back again
If it suddenly ended tomorrow
I could somehow adjust to the fall
Good times and riches and son of a b-tches
I've seen more than I can recall
Chorus:
These changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
Through all of the islands and all of the highlands
If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane
I think about Paris when I'm high on red wine
I wish I could jump on a plane
So many nights I just dream of the ocean
God I wish I was sailin' again
Oh, yesterday's over my shoulder
So I can't look back for too long
There's just too much to see waiting in front of me
And I know that I just can't go wrong
Chorus:
With these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of my running and all of my cunning
If I couldn't laugh I just would go insane
If we couldn't laugh we just would go insane
If we weren't all crazy we would go insane
geeeeesh....... guess I`m a little behind times here.
Give me Gene Autry, "South Of The Border", or "Rancho Grande"!
Woody-- I remember Merle singing "Seashores", never heard Willy. But Willy ans Merle sure did a fine job on "Pancho and Lefty".
OK, this is not a Mexico/Baja Song, but when I hear it, it makes me homesick for our home in Bahia Asuncion, so I guess it qualifies
Concerto in D Major for Cello and Orchestra, G. 478/III. Rondo played by Yo-Yo Ma; Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra;Ton Koopman--my favorite, or
anything else from the Yo Yo Ma Simply Baroque CD.
We have this CD in Baja and have almost worn it out---so when we here a selection here on the radio, we think about sunrise, sunset, and everything in
between in Bahia Asuncion.
And while not about traveling down to Baja, Willie Nelson and On the Road Again has me headed down Highway 1.
