Red Underwear and Grapes
Don't forget to wear your red underwear tonight for the assurance of good luck in the new year...and eat one grape a second in the 12 minute countdown
to midnight...way harder than you may think! One grape for each coming month to bring the best of everything for that month.
This is a tradition in Spain, parts of Italy, and parts of Mexico. Some say that different colors...not just red...underwear signify wishes for the
new year!
And a happy, productive, prosperous New Year to all!

720 grapes? Hard, indeed. Is that perhaps a 12 second countdown?

Elizabeth:
Thanks for the New Years Eve suggestion.
My wife has adamantly refused to lend me any red ones.
The white/racing stripe boxer has worked for me over the years. My luck has been pretty good.
I take my grapes in fermented juice form. Tonight its Salmon with a good Oregon Argyle Champaign. Have a Happy New Year all.

Uh, yeah, I meant the 12 second, not minute, countdown!!!! Sorry if my error causes anyone to try to eat 720 grapes!

They were all out of grapes at Pescador-- 12 sips of chardonnay will have to do.
Easy to find red underwear here though!

Almost had to rely on the grapes alone. Went to Yuma looking for blackeyed peas and collard greens. No such luck, town's full of nothing but
Northern Snowbirds. Returning to San Luis, I figured if I couldn't find them in Yuma there was no way I'd find them in my 99,9% Mexican town. I was
half right. Checked the frozen food section at the new Wally World for the heck of it and was surprised to find chopped collard greens. No
black-eyed peas. Oh well, did get some cornbread mix. Got home and my wife saved the day, pulling a bag of dried BEPs out of the cupboard!
While many people associate the peas (beans really) with coins and the greens with folding money, the real significance is simpler. The custom
(according to my family) began in the South the year after the end of the War of Northern Aggression, when, thanks to Mr. Sherman's scorched earth
policy, the plantations lay in ruins and no one had the means to put on the lavish feasts of the past. Supposedly, all most had to eat was black-eyed
peas and collard greens. The following harvest season brought bumper crops and the beginnings of a return to prosperity. The planters remembered
their modest New Year's meal and thought it must have something to do with their good luck. The principle being that if you start the year humbly, it
can only go uphill from there.
Not to hijack, but on the subject of holidays I'd like to borrow a page from Festivus (a holiday for the rest of us), "the Airing of Grievances". I
am sick of the media going on about the decade, "The Decade in Review", "The Decade of the Oughts" etc. If you're talking about the period from Jan,
1, 2000 until today, IT"S NOT A FREAKING DECADE! It's nine years.
All my childhood I wanted to be older. Now I\'m older and this chitn sucks.

Oso, I've been sitting here counting this on my fingers for 2 full minutes, and I think that Jan i 2010 is the beginning of the 11th year. Of the
21st century that is. But I do agree with you on the pundits!
