Kidnapping call

TRUE STORY

(Warning, uncharacteristic foul language from me)

So last night i am alone at home, resting. The phone rings, and i pick up the phone, only to hear a girl crying desperately, wich made me freak out. She started screaming, saying "daddy! daddy! they got me, please, do everything they say". (i am not a father, so unless my cat Camila has been kidnapped and can now talk, i am pretty sure what this is).

Then, a man starts cursing at me, "hey mother*****, i have your girl, and i am going to cut her head off unless you", i interrupt the guy and tell him, "look you dumb idiot, can't you get a new story, the one your trying to use on me is so old". A few seconds of silence pass, and the guy says, "do you know the one about the gulf cartel?". I say, "yeah, thats pretty lame, what are you? and idiot? get a new one for christ sake". Another 5 seconds pass and he says "what about the decapitated head?" i go "thats another stupid one, are you that stupid?" another 5 seconds pass and he says "oh.........mmmm.......well, ok, see you later, thanks".

At this point i laughed til my stomach hurt.

:lol::lol::lol:

But there is a sad side to this....it would be received totally different by a parent whose daughter wasn't in their presence. There are truly sick people out there who'd do anything for money....other than work for it, that is! Plus they're teaching young kids how to attempt extortion.

Edit: Fix transposition

There is a lot of this phone intimidation going on in Central Mexico right now. All kinds of crazy attempts to extort money. Some gringo communities have on-line phone number listings and it has become a resource for these creeps.

Thank God you don't have a daughter or you might have had a heart attack.

Jesse, the whole scenario you have cited is absolutely horrifying to those who may have a young child, fortunately you knew where your 4 legger child was at:biggrin:

Nope, this is pretty standard. I know at least 5 people who have gotten the call here in La Paz.

I hope when/if these callers are caught they are put away for a very long time, plus they are training a child in their sick behaviour..

It has happened to me here in Ensenada twice just in the last year and friends say they get these calls all the time. My number is not in the phone book. I believe they do this at random.

Yesterday afternoon I received a call where the woman was trying to obtain our banking information asking pretty direct questions. I just hang up and the calls stop.

based on the recent hackers getting into Internet Explorer (and that security hole still wide open), everyone is more sophisticated than these idiots. But hey, it's a third world country.. Mexico will progress someday to become hackers not hack-offs.

Actually, I had a recent e-mail from some dude who was a bank manager in Ghana who just happened to find a million dollars left over and didn't want to give it to his superiors. Was offering a finders fee. Obviously, after I stopped laughing, I deleted the e-mail. Point is that this was not a hacker. Just an internet grifter.

About 12 years ago I received a hand-addressed, hand-written letter postmarked from Nigeria (funky foreign paper and everything). I treasure it...I felt so special.

P.S. The world has access to anyone with DBA.

Thats a pretty ignorant statement. This particular scam has nothing to do with internet fraud. Wich by the way, exists just as much here as it does anywhere in the world. Mayor banks are often targeted by Mexican hackers.

Its just annoying to keep reading about Mexicans not being as smart of sophisticated as the "outside world". EVERYTHING that you find anywhere in the world, happens here as well, good or bad.

I'll second your statement Jesse (EVERYTHING that you find anywhere in the world, happens here as well, good or bad.) seems we're witnessing a torrent of bad in the world right now though and it's very unnerving, innocent children being used as pawns is pathetic and the "adults" need to be dealt with.:mad:
