Bob , i think the problem, with rigs like ours(full size RAM) is the length. Your truck is a little bit longer than mine you, but their will be plenty
of room in TW and my truck..But DK is more qualify to answer your q's since he has been there alot times...

Bob, all vehicles should expect something to get damaged or broken... ALL vehicles.
Both of my last two Tacomas had got a dent in the lower side, below the doors, from coming down on a boulder. My last Tacoma got the trailer electric
hook up broken (it is mounted on the bottom of the bumper) and I lost one of the mud flaps.
Anything longer than my Tacoma can expect more dents in the underside as you all will come down on rocks or the road since there are many steep
drop-offs or high points. This is an ideal road for Jeep CJs or lifted Wranglers with oversized tires... just like the Rubicon road near Lake Tahoe.
That all being said, I STRONGLY suggest you look at BajaRoadrunner's two short YouTube videos (I posted links to, as did he)... Fullsize pickups and
Hummers have been in there and got out... So, sure you can do it... But, it is steep where you won't see the ground in front of you many places and
will want a spotter to help with tire placement.
Elizabeth and I have the days off and devoted for the run (she likes that road that much, as a former Jeep CJ-5 owner and Rubicon trail runner)... The
only thing that could be an issue is my work being so dead (with this rain & economy) to justify the 'luxury' of a vacation!
Hope you come down, and at least try... Some with trucks (or affraid) park at the top of the Widowmaker and walk (or you could hitch a ride with
others) the final mile+ to the mission. Going down the Widowmaker is not so bad, other than the big rocks you drive over... It is wondering how you
will be able to drive back up it, that has many stay on the top.

It scares me too... the same way as a giant roller coaster at Magic Mountain scares me... After I do it, I want to do it again!
Remember, the event that gave it the name 'Widowmaker' was my first time trying to climb it, on a quad with BajaMur on a m/c... We were both bounced
off our rides and got our hands/ arms bloody on the rocks!

Is it raining all the way south to Cataviña? I'm scared of the swamp more than the "widowmaker".

Just got off the radio w/ Ralph XE2/N6MNO at Rancho Santa Ines (3945mHz) who reported a 24 hr rain total of 3.29" and a storm total of 5.1" - YEE HAW!
Looks like it's gonna be a beautiful spring in the Baja desert this year!

Yeah, I already read the storm watch post regarding Rancho Santa Inez.
No que no, ya sabía! We are going unless it rains on that weekend. The desert
is going to be beautiful, real colorful.
My San Pedro Martir trip on the 30th is another story.

Im looking at the weather too, all that rain is going to make a big diff, in the arroyo pools in SMM, little water doesn't scare me. I hope all the
rds down south Ensenada are repair by then, according to local news , San Vicente's bridge was whipe out...and Santo Domingo's bridge is next.
For sure the Catavina desert is going to be blooming...

This is getting to be a very exciting trip. Flood waters across the hwy at Catavina. We may get in and not out. I think I'll pack a little more food
and my backpak. Ken and his Jeep friends may have to come after us.
Bob you can leave your truck at Santa Ines or drive it to the widowmaker and park it there and ride in with us. Which ever make you feel a little
easier.

Man I hope this won't be a problem for us on FEB 12
Baja Highway unpassable in some areas...Jan 22, 2010
Hi everyone,
I do not know if this information is already here, if so I apologize in advance.
There are several places of Highway 1 unpassable at the moment, due to the heavy rains:
-- The bridge at Las Animas has collapsed.
-- The bridge at San Vicente was also affected.
-- Apparently, the bridge at Colonet has also been damaged.
-- The bridge in Col. Guerrero is damaged.
-- The bridge in El Rosario has partially collapsed... many stranded people south of it... food supplies are being delivered with ropes over it.
Normal communications with the San Quintin area are unavailable at the moment... no phone services, no cellular, no internet (only Movistar services
are available in some areas). TelNor and Telcel have dispatched technicians via air to attempt repairs.
Even though crew repairs have been sent to repair the road, it seems they are working their way from the North, therefore there have been no time
frames mentioned for completion... I do not know, but common sense would suggest that the water flowing in those rivers has to subside before
attempting repairs... this could delay the repair crews.
If you plan to travel to Baja in the next days, it would be wise to wait a little bit and see how things develop.
Hope this info is helpful.

Well, I think they will have things passable in a week or less... But, more wet weather may be in store... so we can just keep watching. Cold and wet
is no fun... If we need to try again, then summertime may be the better time?

Certainly adds a little more adventure to the trip. I was planning on heading south after the mision escapade. How could the El Rosario bridge
collapse?

Any bridge can be washed out... if the ground it is built upon is no longer there (ie. flash floods enlarge the arroyo sideways or deeper).
Hope all can be fixed soon!

Bridge at El Rosario
When the road was completed to La Paz in the early in the 70"s around 75-76 there was a storm just a strong as this past one. The bridge at El Rosario
was completely washed out. People had to wait several days on either side for the water level to drop. Once it was low enough tractors were used to
tow vehicles across.. Nature will always take it the course of least resistance.
Looking forward to Santa Maria, Plan to get to Santa Inez early afternoon will be camp there Friday night. Look for 95 Nissan pick up. Come by for a
drink...

Bajacat I'm with you and DK. WE should re-evaluate the situation in the coming week or two and see how things are. Either way is OK with me. I'm
retiring effective April 1st so anytime after that gives me more time to play or be stranded. Maybe walk into astrobaja's place and be stranded with
him if he's not out by then.

For me, later is better. As a member of Search and Rescue, I have a conflict with a 3 day training on snow and ice. I have been sitting in the weeds,
waiting for to see if we will really be doing it or not, it is not easy to schedule, just like this trip. If my training is a go, I am out, if not, I
am in. A bit later is better as Spring will be in full force and the weather will be that much warmer, maybe even swimming warm.

I agree that safety is paramount that said I still plan on going and giving it a try.. If it looks to dangerous I wont risk it.. It is always good
to be in the Baja. Just hope it does not rain that weekend and if it does Ni Modo... Still looking forward to Santa Maria...
Please post if this trip will be canceled or not... Definitely I would not try this alone....
