BTW, Tunaeater, my son and I, were with you guys on the 2004 Matmoi ride.

Thanks for the reminder.. forgot to include it in my post. My house is located at k43 campo San Antonio. Turn left at the R U Lost sign just past K43 go up the small hill , turn right and you are at the trailers and the house. Look for the white old Trooper with the rear wheel off.. If you get to K44 you went to far..

The beach available for camping is located in Matomi south of

Latitude:30.46656 Longitude:-114.63605 GPS location

The access road to the beach for camping is past about 2km past the Pozo which is at k60 at:

Latitude:30.47365 Longitude:-114.66169 You will note a rock painted white with a red bulls eye on the left side of the road as you head south. Turn left here

I hope I did not invert these....

Oh yes... HI Rudy! I talked to you at the final turkey fest at Baja Lou's (a year ago) and we went and saw the new beach lot 'Playa Nomad' or was it 'Camp Whenever-you-want' by Punta San Fermin... good directions! I posted photos at your new beach lot in my 1-09 trip report here on Nomad.

And I thought I could hide my identity forever.... Hi David.
Yes we did talk at Baja Lou's last year. Like usual I got there kind of late.. Those were some good turkey fiestas, met some interesting people and other Nomads.
There remains a standing invitation for all Nomads to camp gratis on my beach lot at Matomi..
BTW we just got the name for our Mexcian Corporation AKA
Sociedad Anonima approved by the Secretaria de Relaciones Exteriores. We are now "Rancho Matomi Enterprises"..

What do you think the 13 miles to the mission is like now? You know that arroyo got totally filled up - maybe eroded some of the vados (cross-feeding streams en route) and uphill out of the dips to expose more rock. I would be a passenger, regardless. But for you all with the guts and gears, is there a Plan B? Is anyone able to contact Raph Schoonmaker who lives in the arroyo to ask about conditions?
I guess we can wait till mid-next week to make a final, decision. As now I think is a go , just be a little more prepare I have digging bars and shovels, for any possible rd hazzards. We will not know if we don't try it...

ps. when I said San Felipe, I meant to change the ride to The San Felipe area, to go around SF to Gonzaga on to Chapala-Mex 1, it would make a great trip but also will add alot miles and time is the problem.

Accuweather.com shows the next storm (today in USA) is not so big in Ensenada and El Rosario BUT starting 7 Feb. there are several days of rain in Ensenada and El Rosario. Sigh. The Swamp is waiting, waiting....

Many thanks to my hero in El Rosario who has done so much for so many gringos, Antonio Munoz, a.k.a. BajaCactus.

Possible Re-Route Route

After reading the 'Stranded' and 'Caida delos Puentes' threads, I now understand how bad things are in getting to Cataviņa. That said, I would suggest the following:

1. Travel Hwy 5 south to Laguna Chapala (gassing/stocking up at Gonzaga Bay Pemex).

2. Travel north to Santa Inez - begin run/have fun.

3. Return to Gonzaga Bay after fun/run, return home.:bounce:

Boy, that sounds like an adventure in the making!! Wish I were going along...(work schedule)

I'm still in too. It looks like they will have hwy 1 open all the way down with bypasses around the bridges that are down. I am interested in seeing how much water is in crossings down to the mission.

Gonzaga Pemex is not an option at last report... Going the long way around via Gonzga will add 6+ hours to the drive to Santa Ynez (from San Diego) vs. going direct via El Rosario.

Naturally, if today's rain isn't heavy down there and there is no more between now and then, Using Hwy. 1 the whole way won't be a problem... detours will be well in place (as Antonio posted last night).

However, MORE rain is precicted in a few days... at least for San Diego...

Just FYI

PS, Even it it was totally dry down there, with the lack of work due to weather (and economy), we are most likely not going. You got to know I really want to... but the rains in the area filling the bog just add to the other issues. We wnt to try the new Tacoma in there, so will re-schedule our trip for later... unless some really good jobs come my way and the weather stays dry!

I'm still planning to be camped overnight at Santa Ynez Friday night unless the trip gets canceled in which case I'll spend a couple more days in Mulege before riding back.
