Next to the people, the food, the weather and the beaches, duty free is my favorite part of going to Baja. The last time I went, I found Beefeater Gin on sale for $8.00 a liter. At my neighborhood liquor store it run's about $20 for the 750ml bottle.

Now if I could just find a few non-boozing friends to make the trip with me, I could really stock my bar. :D

If you are not a California resident, then the 1 litre per person rule doesn't apply. At least that's what I last heard. Anyone else?

that's BS - you only get a litre, this is a

customs thing - has nothing to do with where you live or where you enter.

Chinaca is truly special - on par or betters Gran C. At $35 i may head there today.

Somehow i just can't warm up to Jimador though, least not for straight sipping. maybe for mixing.

I was not trying to BS anyone, that is why I said think and asked for other input.

I recall people from outside California telling me they were allowed more than a litre if they were only passing through Calif. on their way to their home state. Maybe this was changed or they were 'BSing' me???

I got mixed responses too when I tried to figure it out, so to play it safe I only went with one. I'm not sure why it's different, but when I flew back from Mexico City last year, each adult was allowed two litres. It could be because we were flying into Detroit or it was mainland vs. Baja. I'm not sure.

Yah, I do think it is a California state restriction enacted by the liquor lobby here. Or, it used to be. Being from Arizona, I think Capt. Mike would be really angry if he could have doubled what he's been bringing back, but didn't!

Duty free stores are on the U.S. side, almost always within a block of the border. You pay no tax to either country, but MUST take it out of the country. Usually a store employee and/or security guard will escort you to the border or follow you far enough to watch that you don't turn around without crossing. As a zoner, I use the UETA store in San Luis, often. Today, I picked up a liter of Dewars for $14. I usually walk across to avoid the car line, walk around the block, cross back in and declare 1 liter of "alcohol or spirits" as all customs agents are ok with the tequila but some get confused if you mention scotch. Believe it or not, they are not all experts on the law. If I cross back at Algodones, into CA, I can take as much as I like. BUT, I have to declare it and pay duty on any over a liter, which sort of negates the advantage of "duty free".

When I arrived at Los Cabos airport . They confiscated all my
Beef Jerky ( 6 bags) . When I left they only let me take
one bottle of booze . I thought NAFTA took care of this ?

NAFTA is devised to take care of Halliburton and Boeing, not people like Nomads.

Gran Centenario.....I have yet to taste better, and it has not been for lacking fo trying....

One is one no matter the US location. Although like many items in crossing, it often has a lot to do with the mood of those doing the questioning. I have actually admitted I had some extra bottles of wine and tequila and been told okay....My strategy was I was going to pay if need be...guess they did not believe it worth the hassle.
