Bicycles on Highway 1

I respect the effort and sense of adventure, but these folks are nuts.

Last trip to Baja I saw about 5 different solo bicyclists pedaling along the shoulder of highway 1 loaded with camping gear. I am guessing they are riding the entire highway. A semi truck almost creamed one rider, then left him huffing a huge cloud of exhaust.

Again, I respect the effort – but this seems like an awfully dangerous and dirty (breathing Mexico highway fumes all day long) way to experience Baja.

Anyone ever talked to one of these folks?

Anyone considering this trip - think twice, it looked like hell to me - and I enjoy bike riding.

lame troll, troll (you might catch DK with that bait -- your addition of photo is good bait to draw out dk in a game of photo-one-upmanship)

Hey goat. In this case, I'm reasonably certain that sharktooth is not a troll. I agree with you that the topic has has a life of its own. My only concern for those folk, is that they have done their homework and understand just how perilous that trip can be.

About 30 years ago I ran a chase vehicle for a group of solo and tandem bikers.
They are not nuts, they just have a sense of adventure that the rest of us can not appreciate. Kinda like the Europeans that fly to Alaska, buy a BMW sportcruiser, then ride it all the way to Cabo, take the ferry to Topolobampo from La Paz, then sell the bike in Mexico city and fly back to Europe.
Now, those guys have some adventure in them. Just keep in mind, that Europeans get weeks of paid vacation per year.

Highway-1 actually is a bicycle lane. Pedal your Schwinn right down the center with the secure feeling that it's all about you and your fun-comfort.
When all of a sudden you look back over your shoulder and see moths spread eagled over a radiator, you'll question your choice of transportation.
Bon Voyage.

BOYS! stop kicking sand..........

Welcome to BajaNomads, Sharktooth!

There was another thread recently about a family (mom, dad, 2 kids, 2 bikes, 2 tandems) making their way down MX1.

I think most folks think its a pretty stoopid thing to do and wonder about the sanity of folks who do it now-a-days..........

especially like in the above example where children are put in grave danger.

Skipjack Joe has attached this image:

Yogi must have been just a kid in this photo. That mask looks like circa 1940's. Hell of a ball player.

Now why didn't we all and/or I think of that... excellent.... leave it to a teacher to deal with the unruly.. thank for such a balanced approach.. and you have all that Hot Sauce... and if there is an old man he doesn't know what he's got... you are a real find!!

And Sharktooh... Welcome to the asylum called Baja Nomads.. it can be quite fun, and the folks here a really a wealth of knowledge about anything one can think of... you have at your finger tips... answers to most all questions.. and opinions on ALL..

An excellent place to learn about just about ANYTHING with Baja, being first..

As you can see from your fist, even bicycle riding is well thought about.. on Baja Nomads.. Again Welcome.. and just "put up" what ever it is you're thinking about.. either here of "off topic" and you in most cases will get a response.. "hook up!!"
