Anyone ever talked to one of these folks?

Anyone considering this trip - think twice, it looked like hell to me - and I enjoy bike riding.

welcome, Sharktooth. yes, the topic's been done to death. yes, I've talked to loads of these folks (while it's nothing I would do, I do open my palapa to them, feed them, let them shower, rest, etc). yes, it looks like hell to me, too. but my not wanting to do something doesn't mean it's not okay for someone else.

I haven't met an insane one yet. each and every one (of the many I've hosted in the past few years) has been highly educated, intelligent, goal oriented, healthy, and a lot more interesting and worldly than many of the retirees, fisherfolk, cruisers, excruisers, vacationers, etc that I've met in my years in Baja. and I include the Canadian family of five.

if we substitute 'people who travel to Baja/Mexico' for 'bicyclists,' there are plenty of Americans (USA)/Canadians who would say...these folks (us, gang!) are insane! we do seem to have plenty of threads on subject, ie trying to get others to come visit, fear of the border zones, dangers thereof, etc.

BajaNomads are part of a special subset; long distance/those who bike in third world countries are in another. in Baja, we share the same highway and the same dangers...other vehicles, animals, etc etc etc. slow down. pay attention. give everyone a break/brake.

reality\'s never been of much use out here...

Hi All - I just felt bad for bringing up a topic if it had already been beat to death....I find that annoying on other forums I belong to as well - so sorry for bringing up a maxed out topic.

Thanks for the welcomes from some of you folks. Anyway - I totally respect people for their sense of adventure, but this bike thing just looks like a good intention gone bad.

I met people who were kayaking the entire Sea of Cortez, hiking vast portions of Baja - I'd even applaud someone for swimming across the gulf - but riding a bike on highway 1... the potential roadkill factor and truck exhaust huffing just doesn't seem like it is the best way to experience Baja.

There are other highways in Mexico with bigger shoulders.

3 cyclists headed south on Hwy 1 today...in the rain, just south of El Rosario. They weren't even wearing their helmets! Now THAT'S crazy.

BajaNuts - no problem

This forum has always been a great resource. The attitudes keep it entertaining, and have always been able to get good info from everyone here.

I just have to be nice because I work in the Mexico travel industry - so I need to practice restraint.
