Auto insurance in Baja

I need to insure my new truck in Baja. My company, USAA, only covers us for collision and comprehensive to 75 miles below the border. We usually buy Mexican Liability insurance from Vagubundos del Mar or Baja Bush Pilots.

USAA suggests the "Bravo Agency" for collision and comprehensive insurance. What do you use and what does it cost you, roughly?

I would think we should be able to buy all three kinds of insurance for Mexico from the same company.

Your input will be appreciated to da max!

I use MAPFRE for two types of policy. On one, they insure my drivers license so I can drive my beater, currently registered in the South Dakota. The second, full coverage for my new Jeep, registered in California.
DL insurance costs around 145 bucks per year.
Full coverage for the Jeep is 455 bucks per year.

cost is always dependent on the value of your vehicle.

Fundamentally, there are only a handful of insurers in Mexico that offer coverage for folks heading South for vacation or part time stays. Their rates are their rates. For me, it boils down to service. That said, I have used both BajaBound and MexAdventure. They both have very user-friendly web sites. From my perspective, and Geoff can correct me, if he wishes, but I believe MexAdventure offers coverage with more insurers, for what that's worth.

I have purchased insurance for many years through Lewis and Lewis Insurance in Beverly Hills, Calif. They provide insurance underwritten by Qulitas, Compania de Seguros. They ensure my boat(on the road), boat trailer, vehicles and travel trailers. I leave two travel trailers in baja and they are covered on the road and parked in the RV Park! I have about $80,000 worth of stuff insured and it costs about $500/year. Jim Lewis Jr. is the man you want to talk with at 310-657-1112 or 800-966-6830. They are extemely easy to work with and they can send stuff quickly by fax. Luckily, I have never had a claim but I have never heard of any problems from people who have had claims. Good luck. The phone numbers are in the text but aren;t showing up in the posting so theit website is www.MexicanAutoInsurance.com
