Canine Rattlesnake Avoidance Training
This year we've come across several large red diamond rattlesnakes (Crotalus ruber), both in the Loreto area at El Bajo and around Las Parras on the
road to San Javier, and at the Pacific along the coast south of San Juanico. Given our young Australian shepherd's natural curiosity, she's getting
her rattlesnake avoidance training next week. There are several videos on You Tube that show the training and its results.

There are also vaccinations available that slow the effect of the venom.

We were very happy with them. We also use the vaccinations---they need a booster every six months.
Good Luck and ignore anyone who laughs at you for doing all of this. I know there were some who laughed at us at the time.

Sadly, Patrick died of a heart attack about 6 months ago and his wife had a stroke. She is currently reviewing the available training operations and
doesn't recommend any of them for various reasons. My wife took our dog to Patrick two years ago and we actually came across a rattler while hiking in
Whittier last weekend. My dog froze and looked at it, so I guess the training worked since he didn't try to attack it like he does with every other
living creature.

Oh that makes me so sad---Patrick really knew what he was doing. And I so remember his wife with her arm around me assuring me that the shock was not
hurting my pups and explaining every thing that was happening. They were a great team---sad, really sad.

Found this beauty around the San Antonio del Mar (Colonett area) in spring a few years back. He was about 4' long.
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

Yeah, we've suspended walks in the canyon with the dogs temporarily for the spring. We've seen just their heads sticking out of the bushes onto the
trail, those are the ones to watch for...
Haven't had a bad trip yet....
