Alfonsina

Alfonsina passed away yesterday in Hermosillo. There will be a small memorial service during the annual fiesta May 29-30. She will be missed by many.

We are very, very sad and we will miss her. She was a fine lady of the best kind.

We have known her for 33 years.

One of the greatest Baja pioneer entrepreneurs has left us. Our thoughts go out to her son, Joaquin, and all of her beautiful family. She will be missed my many.

Can you imagine being a girl 55 years ago in a macho society going to a beach 100 miles....and about 8 hours...from the nearest town to open a cantina and rent spaces for trailers on the sand?

We didn't discover the place until 1979 and even then it was most remote....had to fly in our water or get it from Papa's goat well. Cantina and us ate what we caught. Beautiful....but not a place that you would think a woman would have set up.

Baja has certainly had some pioneer women that did what few others including men would do and did it very well.

I never met her, but the her life story must be something else. So, if she came down 55 years ago... that means, it all started around 1955... WOW! I can't imagine what it was like then and how the family made it all those years in such a remote part of Baja.
