Bahia Asuncion Residents and Visitors

The Lobos Marinos, the local bike club ,really needs some help. There are several kids who want to join, but cannot do so because of the lack of equipment.

Before we were able to get them going with the generous help of a some nomads---some who have never even been here. But we have about exhausted our resources and can only do so much---we do continue to donate what we can.

Today Chayo, the head of the club, showed us what has happened to many of the bikes----some frames are there, but the parts are trashed. He also said that one Canadian who will be back in October is going to try and help.

But if any of you other part time residents or visitors want to help, they really need mountain and road bikes and parts of every kind---tubes, brakes, cables, cranks, chains, tires, seats, etc. and of course money helps.

To leave any donations, Chayo (Jesus) is easy to find. Besides being a fisherman, he has a carpenter shop which is easy to see on the way into town. It not far from the entrance to the town and is on the right hand side of the street as one enters town.

Because of a medical problem, we will be leaving in a day or two and not sure when we will be back---

So if any of you part time residents or visitors who have any connections to the bicycle world, or can help in any way, stop and see Chayo----he is also a nice person and one of the good carpenters in town if you need any work done.

I have posted lots of photos of the team before, but they are on my other computer----but here is Chayo

Just wanted to get this message out before we leave as I know there are some who are planning on being here soon.

Chayo does not use a computer---if you want, you could u2u me your phone number and we could ask him to call you.

And yes, he said the day for the race here has been changed to the 30th, but you never know if it will change again---happens all the time.

Thanks and the uniforms will be GREAT for your team. Wanted to attend the game, but could not do so---hopefully, next time.

Bump---hope some of you will participate.

The young researcher from UCBerkley who is visiting here to look at some plants is going to set up a drive in Berkeley for the team.

He and his father (who is also here visiting) want to help. Any other Bahia Asuncion people?

They told us that so many of the riders in the US change out perfectly good parts on a regular basis---like maybe use a chain for 6 rides and change it. It is against the law for the bike shops to sell or use these used parts, so the used parts either end up in the riders garage or in the dumpster behind the bike shop.

New stuff is of course the best, but these perfectly good used parts would be put to VERY good use. We even discussed the possibility of dumpster diving.

And if you bring your own bike down, Chayo loves to ride with visitors and show them our trails.

And, we have brought down several surfboards, boggie boards and wet suits for the surf team and they also still need whatever. Our friend Jamie can repair damaged ones and distributes donations to kids through-out the community.

Thank you

Hope we are able to return quickly and before the race here.

I'd like to see a lot of these groups do fundraisers instead of always asking for donations. That's just my view as a parent and a teacher and it holds for all kids regardless of where they live.

I'll be down next week and would be willing to have my truck washed for a donation to the team.

They have done fund raisers in the past and will continue to do so. Sometimes the fund raisers are for money for things like gas and food so they can participate in the league

What they really need right now are parts that cannot be bought here-----and good used parts are fine. They have a stack of frames that need to be rebuilt and several children who want to join the team.

We and some others are doing the promotion for the donations so more children can participate. The leader of the team is not the one pushing, but he also really appreciates any and all the help the team is provided. They never have been the ones to push.

The head of the team pays us for all the new parts we bring to him for his bikes-----the other parts, clothes, seats, bikes tools, etc. that we bring are donated to the team for the benefit of the children involved.

From your involvement with biking groups in the US, you surely are aware that so many perfectly good bike parts are thrown away in the US or rot in someone's garage. These parts could make a difference in the life of some of the children in Asuncion.

Since two airplanes have been stolen from here, you would actually ask someone other than the police or military to guard your plane or even hang around it? You think the cartel would let a bunch of kids get in their way? Amazing.

Thank you to those who have volunteered to look for and bring down some used parts.

It is really nice that we are receiving positive and sincerely helpful support for the children from some people.

hey - i didn't say the guard had to be a kid....
it could be a cop i'll pay...or a tough local who's willing to stay and watch.
i am NOT concerned about a cartel theft - they DON'T want a low wing 4 seat piper, never gonna take it - they KNOW what they want and it is 200 series Cessnas that are fast or can carry a load.

what i worry about are the little devils on bikes who will STEAL my GD gas, or busta windscreen to get inside.....it happened to that rag wing piper last year and he was then STUCK there - they found the little bastards that did it and should have MADE their families PAY. and beat their asses too.

that airport is too far out of town to consider my very expensive tool safe.
and i ain't gonna sleep under the wing there.
i'll go to Campo rene instead. :smug:

Diane

Every single person in Baja wants a bike don'tcha think? Every kid and adult needs one. Maybe since you guys are becoming experts you could organize yourselves into a bike charity and raise money for bikes for those less fortunate and ride around baja delivering bikes and bike education to others? That would be an awesome thing and teach the kids and adults about helping others and being self-sufficient.

In my neighborhood where people are extremely poor like so many others and most have nothing at all, we use recycling to raise money, people have sales of baked goods, fruits and art, and everyone works together to build and repair bikes for kids and adults.

Its tough all over and time to become more self-sufficient I guess...

You can't beat people like BajaCat and Ferna de Tijuana for bringing huge numbers of bikes to Baja... but you can try!

I know ... BajaCat takes the cake !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is the BOMB as my kids say ...

We are going to be spreading the wealth in terms of bikes, P Abreojos will get some in 2 weeks and Bahia Asuncion, if the guy calls me, will get one in 3 weeks !!

My goal PRECISELY is to help these clubs become self sufficient with car washes, bake sales, garage sales. It CAN be done and they are slowly but surely learning how to do it

Unbelievable---we have absolutely no problem with people who do not want to get involved even if they are local residents or frequent visitors----but to put down the effort to help the children of this community really is beyond contempt---

Fine, do not help, but why would some of you want to undermine the effort to help a good organization in a community? This is not about us, it is about some of the children in Bahia Asuncion.

Yes, fund raisers are good, and the local team has had many and continues to dos so, but they certainly cannot raise enough money to rebuild bikes. The parts are VERY expensive---that is why we are seeking good used parts.

As parents and teachers, we support this effort because we know that it is a great activity for young people. We also help with the surf club. These types of activities help young people stay focused in a positive direction. And we really care about our adopted community. Yes, there are poorer communities in Baja, and we have always supported Ferna's efforts in the north with cash and donations, but this is about one particular community and one positive organized activity.

Again, we are currently having more success with a few silent people on this forum and from other caring individuals. We are amazed by the efforts to trivialize this project. We do understand that many ex-pats are really involved in other communities---that we understand. This is about Bahia Asuncion.

Trying to undermine this effort, and/or making smart a$$ comments are really unbelievable. Don't help, no problem--but please stay out of it.

John and Diane

Diane,

I think outreach to support others is a really great idea, I am sorry that you are offended by my suggestion.
