Disabled Explorers Visit Coco This Weekend

At the Overland Expo back in April I had the pleasure of meeting Lance Blair from Disabled Explorers. Lance is a single amputee that lost his lower left leg in an accident in 1988. Not one to shy away from challenges, he has since hiked the Andes, backpacked through the Yucatan and traveled throughout the world, and now works full time as an RN. He started Disabled Explorers to show people with disabilities that losing a limb or becoming disabled does not mean you have to limit what you can do or where you can go. It is pretty inspiring stuff.

This weekend, Lance and a crew will be heading down to Coco's Corner to see if Coco is interested in getting prosthetic legs custom built for him. As most of you probably know, Coco is now a double amputee. He was given a set of prosthetic legs last year, but they were the wrong size and hurt too much for him to use. If he is interested in getting the custom set, it will require a series of trips down to in order to get the legs fitted, adjusted and dialed in for Coco. All of this will be accomplished by donations, and it is not going to be cheap.

Provided that Coco is interested, I would love to get the Nomad community together to do some sort of fundraiser, be it in Baja or somewhere north of the border, or both. Baja Bound has come on board as a sponsor to help offset travel costs for this weekend, but this is only the beginning. I will post an update next week and let you know what the outcome is.

Check out the Disabled Explorers website for more information.

I for one would be happy to donate to help Coco. I am sure there are many others as shown by their generosity for Coco in the past.

Would be fun to pick a date for a set-price dinner somewhere, with a built-in donation. Maybe a slide show too? A $1 raffle for something. Some place with a separate room? I'd go (if I'm not traveling).
