car thefts increasing - be careful

Just a quick alert to everyone

I work in the tourist Mexican auto industry, and we are seeing a dramatic increase in auto theft claims for 2010

The theft rate has nearly doubled compared to recent years - so be extra careful with your car.

The club, a brake lock, or any other theft deterent is highly recommended - even when parking for 5 minutes! SUVs and pickups are the highest risk. Even though the club or brake locks are not theft proof - they can be enough of a pain to send thieves to the next vehicle.

Sorry to be an alarmist - but it seems there may be some organized auto theft racket going on right now - so be careful.

Cheers

Specifically, what areas of Baja are you noticing this increase?

I'm betting Ensenada is right up there near the top. GTA has always been epidemic here.

It is nice to be talking stolen cars as the major problem instead of the really really ugly narco incidents of the past few years. Getting back to normal.

About 10 years ago someone broke into my Bronco right in front of my house. They stole the radio and nothing else. The joke was on them it did not work. While we are in Ensenada doing shopping we always pay someone to watch our truck.

Thefts are happening everywhere - but the highest concentration is within a few hundred miles of the border in Baja and mainland Mexico.

Thefts have always been an issue - BUT the past few months have been record setting rates of theft claims.

The sky is not falling - so I am not trying to incite panic - just be more vigilant right now.

There has not been any violence related to the car thefts - just cars vanishing while the owner is gone. So heads up.

When I was living in Ensenada someone broke in to my 92 Explorer, papers were all there and everything...nothing was taken...but they did screw up my door so now I can only unlock the car from the passenger side (grrrr).

Aaah well...when it comes to having to lock our car doors here in B.A. we'll let you know!:spingrin:

We've bee seeing the upswing in property crimes for the past six months or so in Rosarito. A bad combination of there being more tweekers, less service-sector jobs and no dominant cartel to scare the c-ckroaches into staying indoors like before. I would think this problem runs more along the border, and not down the baja coastline.

I've been told that one should never use a remote to lock a vehicle.

Isn't that how you turn on the alarm?

Can't speak for all but using the interior door lock also activates my alarm. In addition, my insurance required I install an hard wired ignition lock out that works independently of the car alarm system. It activates 30 seconds after I turn off the ignition.

Be careful in Mexicali

www.nohotwire.com - $465 ignition kill switch

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I parked my Rubicon Wrangler in Mexicali in front of a minimart when TW got in a bad accident and totalled his Toyota pickup a few years ago (Dec. 07). While I was talking to the Police Officers regarding his accident, a lowrider pulled into the parking lot, and 4 men inside stopped behind my Jeep. They looked around, and saw me standing with the Police across the street looking straight at them, and they quickly left the parking lot. c-ckroaches? That's a good description.
