Business Opportunity, Anyone?

I just got back from a sad trip to CCC. The same people are working the registers but the new owners have yet to make an appearance. While the outside still says CCC, the Chedraui brand is making its appearance inside.

I am sorry to report that there are only 9 packages of English Muffins left. For those of us living here, now would be a good time to stock up on non-perishables still available (I'm going after my favorite mustard ASAP).
They also removed the bulletin board outside the Colima store (don't know about others). Such is progress.

On the other hand, I'm told there's a Chinese symbol that means "crisis" as well as "opportunity." And, while this may not be a crisis to many, it is indeed an opportunity to invest in a captive market. If I had a lot of money (which I don't), it would seem like someone could search out the people who comprised the across-border supply network of the CCC brand and put it into business as a local independent brand, with heavy advertising in the local expat community.

How about it, somebody? I'm trying to avoid English Muffin withdrawls here, can somebody help me out? Please?

Steve

I bought a four pack of Thomas' English Muffins at CostCo today... so we're good. I've had a Bimbo before, but never the muffin ;)

After 10 years of CCC, we started shopping fulltime at Walmart yesterday (it's a lot more convenient as that center is on our way out of town anyway).

Meat/veggies are great, groceries on a par - and with Sam's Club, the wine selection is far better than CCC ever was. The CCC bakery was a joke (at least at Colima) and the Walmart one is terrific. Even the "artesanial" loaves we rated "good" - they are not up to the Bread Guy's standards, but at least they are half the price and you can actually find parking.

Only moments of angst were the discovery that the Walmart butter selection is not great, there are no Hansens sodas and the tea selection is (for gringos) rather poor compared to CCC.

Not bad.

Bimbo already owns Thomas English Muffins

http://www.usatoday.com/money/world/2010-06-17-mexowned_N.ht...

Some brands that are Mexican-owned:

Grupo Bimbo:

Entenmann's pastries

Thomas' English muffins

Arnold bread

Brownberry bread

Oroweat bread

Mrs. Baird's snack cakes

Boboli pizza crust

I've learned after 11 years in Loreto full-time that I don't actually need all that stuff. The internet is a great resource for recipes and substitution ideas. I learned to make many of the things I craved such as lye bagels and they're way better than those frozen things you can buy. I've always been a bagel fan myself but if I craved English muffins I am sure I could find an excellent recipe for them online. When I bake or cook something I keep a notebook (chemist habit) and I often substitute ingredients that are available here for those that the recipe calls for. I can't find drain opener crystals here to make the lye bath but I use mesquite ash and make a KOH solution for my lye bath, the taste is there only the brown color is lacking, oh well you get used to it.

I think if business was all that great selling imports then CCC would not have sold out. Importing things is a royal pain in the a$$ and it only seems big box operations can relly pull it off. Learn to cook and bake or love someone that does.
