From what I read in the paper, there was a fear of banning the obnoxious horns (considered a National Symbol) because the "Common" People" of the host country would feel it was a RACIAL slight.

We Must B PC.

Of course, it might be a valid fear in an area where angry people run around chopping off limbs and heads with machetes

Why would any country have what amounts to a long skinny kazoo as a national symbol. :?:

Ouch! The Krauts just slaughtered the Aussies 4-0. Adding insult to injury, Oz had to finish most of the second half with 10 men because of a red that really should only have been a yellow.

Bear,
even without the red ( and I agree ) the score could have easily been 6 to 7-0. The Germans missed some gimmies.
Like always, don't hear much about them, but watch them show for the semis. Discipline and team work. And this from a Dutchmen , whose team has all those multimillionaires in their ranks. Play great everywhere, except when they play for their home country. But, maybe different this time around. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Will know more tomorrow morning. 5.30 am Yuckkk!!!

why are tie games allowed?? you watch 90 minutes of something, it only gets to 1-1 and game is over???!!
reminds me of my early dates in jr. high school.....no 4th base...
come on...what a dumb deal - at least get over time. without a winner it is no contest and inconceiveably boring....:barf::barf:

on the other hand i watched Invictus instead of a match sunday.
Rugby - now there's a sport!

Ties are only in the group stage. After that, there is overtime and penalty kicks to decide the winner. I hate that penalty kicks can decide the World Cup champ.

no diff than sudden death.
if they are good enuff to be champs they shouldn't make penalties.

the Mayans ball games often went 3 days straight.
the winners got to have their heads cut off as a point of pride and honor.

puts a new sheen on "losing your head" over a game.

or..."Heads up" as a warning to be vigil during play.:bounce:

Scoring Excitement

I prefer a game with higher scoring like:

Cricket.

Now, there's a game to get the juices flowing.

vuvuzelas

My brother (in Cape Town) tells me that the organizers have lost a LOT of ticket sales thanks to vuvuzelas (and it's a long way from being the national instrument) - just one of those crazes.

BillM - I am NOT a cricket fan (even worse than baseball) but the game is unrecognizable compared to my youth, when I watched England play South Africa and England scored 11 runs (bases) in two and half days. Mind-numbing.

Now games are one-day, slash and burn affairs that approach exciting . .

Get ready.

Vuvuzelas coming to the U.S. The Tampa Bay Rays passed out 15,000 vuvuzelas to fans on Saturday.

No, the Florida Marlins distributed them as part of a promotion. The Rays happened to be the team they were playing. I was listening on radio and it was annoying.

They are on a roll. Good for them. I just wish the KAKA dude could consider the international meaning of his name. It would be like anybody for any team being called TURD.
I haven't heard that yet.
