Independance Day - It's History And Meaning




"WHEN in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.


We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness —"


Independence Day, commonly known as July 4th or the Fourth of July, commemorates the Continental Congress’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

The document, primarily written by Thomas Jefferson, served as a formal announcement that the 13 American colonies were no longer part of the British Empire and would henceforth be free and independent states. Regarded as the birthday of the United States of America, the day is typically celebrated with parades, fireworks, ceremonies, barbecues and family gatherings.


That was courtesy of the History Channel. For sure, a day of celebration begins today for US citizens..and many non-citizens, too. A busy and happy day (good to take your mind off the recession) Lots of events going on. Back in Baja, Club Burro down in Conception Bay will likely have his annual July 4th party again. Concerts everywhere. I've always looked forward to this great day. So what am I doing to celebrate? I'm driving 300 miles to reach the closest airport to where I am Up North...and listening to the day on XM radio. Maybe I can visit with a moose along the way.

What are YOU doing today? Any thoughts about this day in America?

p.s. I just watched a poll that found that:

A whopping 26% of Americans polled in a large city did not know from what country we achieved independance.

Some said China, some said Mexico, some said Russia...if it were not so depressing, it would be humorous. Where's that moose?

heading out now with 2 buddies to go track down some southern hemi swell before the parking spots are gone. then, in the finest capitalistic manner known to america, we're gonna sell our parking spots when we're ready to leave....

At times I wished I did live back in the good ol US of A. We cherish our visits and eat as much good food as humanly possible.
