banks exchanging dollars for pesos?

The last few months, none of the banks were exchanging dollars for pesos if you did not have an account. Has this changed with some of the banks, if you do not have an account, they are now exchanging.

I don't know this but don't you get the best exchange rate through the ATM's?

supposively, The problem is they charge you a exchange fee as well as a atm usage fee and whatever other fees they can stick to you. I transfer funds from my us account to my mex account, this works well so far. The transfer fee in $30, but when you transfer a few grand at a time it works out to be pretty low.

Is it windy up north? It's whitecap city down here.

yes this is the topic I was looking for!!

Bottom line... I have a passport going to MX, husband lives in MX has a bank account, no US passport. Will they let me exchange there? Should I exchange at the bank/other, US side (san Ysidro) or wait until we get to San Jose? If I can exchange at 13 should I exchange more money that just what is needed for gas. We leave at the end of the week...

One should not travel Baja with any significant amount of cash on them, Pesos or Dollars. From what I recall, you are staying a couple of hotels, one of which is all-inclusive. Considering that many, if not most of the restaurants higher on the food chain than taco stands take credit cards. the supermarkets take credit card, too. You really don't need much more than Pemex money heading down. And, with the exception of San Ignacio, virtually every town has an ATM available. I just don't like carrying a bunch of cash.

Been traveling from LA to Cabo for decades. Credit cards work for so many situations. If you guys don't take them, or don't like to take them, so be it. I would be the first to pummel the card folks for charging so much for fees and other BS. Just saying that for the purpose of safety, folks ought not to carry much cash.

I have found that the Banamex website http://www.banamex.com/ closely matches what I've gotten at a branch ATM the same day. Once or twice i think the rate i got at the local branch was a little better than what's online, but most of the time it's a good indicator of what exchange rate to expect.

Today is posted 12.65. This is using a Citibank debit card- no fees for the transaction to obtain pesos.
