Immigration renewal update
Looks like if you renew in Cabo you will need a CURP number from now on. We went in last week and my wife's FM3 was ready, but they told her my FM2
application was filled out wrong and had to be resubmitted. No extra money and about what I expected anyway. Got a new NUT number and went over to
Todos Santos for a couple days. The next day we check my new number online and it said to come to the office again. Two days later, on the way home, I
stopped in and the notice of CURP necessity was pasted on the podium. I figured that's what I now needed but instead they had my original FM2 ready
for me! Eventually it all works out.
Thanks TW!

Pardon my ignorance on this, but don't you need to be a Mexican citizen to get a CURP?

It's not ignorant to ask a question you don't know the answer to yet ....and the answer is nope....I know at least one gringo on an FM2 who got a CURP, so apparently resident status qualifies.
CURP = Cedula unica de representacion personal
A personal ID number issued at birth in Mexico & retained for life.
Closest comparison would be equivalent to a US Social Security number.

I just renewed my FM3 in San Felipe under the new immigration laws and did not need a CURP. Is this just needed for the FM2?

Morgaine7, my source bows to your definition & adds that you have to have FM2 or better....FM3 does not qualify for a CURP....or at least it
supposedly didn't before the recent immigration changes....I'm quoting La Paz INM office interpretation....look at how smart we're all
getting this morning!

This site has an explanation of how the CURP is devised:
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_45b/helpdata/en/c0/264db81cc411d...
I have heard some debate about the check digit being used only if there are duplicate numbers, but I'm not sure that is reliable info.

I renewed my FM2 in June. I was not asked to provide a CURP#, but one is printed on my new card. The Immigration office in Loreto apparently
obtained the number on their own initiative.

I should have copied down the notice at the desk in Cabo, but it sure seemed to say that any FM3 or FM2 renewals should get their CURP first. There is
a space on my shiny new FM2 card for a CURP number, but I don't have anything in that space. Both our FM3 and FM2 cards have expiration dates on them
and we've been led to believe that when they get renewed next year another card will be issued in their place. Something about the first cards to come
out don't have everything on them...... And, that's all I know about it!

A CURP can be assigned at the Hacienda, Registro Civil, ISSSTE, IMSS,or any Government Service to anyone who lives in Mexico, or at least typically it
can be if there are services in your Poblacion. The CURP may also be known as a Persona Fisica. It is a unique number for each person. The formula for
the CURP assigned relates to your last name, second last name or first name, country of birth and date etc... So you can almost figure out what it
would be... from the formula.
A CURP does correspond to your personal tax payer ID but having one doesn't mean you must pay taxes, just that you might. A Persona Moral is the
number of an RFC or Registered Federal Corporation and follows a similar format.
If you forget your CURP which was assigned you can use the formula to try to remember it... it's 18 letters and numbers.
In terms of registering your cell phone to a name, in North America you are 'requested' to register your cell phone to a name or in Mexico a CURP. Its
not legally required that you register your legal name or CURP. Which is why many Mexicans simply used the same CURP since they forgot their own, or
do not have one.

CURP
They put a CURP on my new FM3 last month. It conforms with the last post. The guy at INM said next year a new card will be issued that is bar-coded
for scanning.

Got my renewal in five days in CSL. I wish they could make it renewable every two or three years.
