horno de adobe para pan y pizza!

Hi all,

My Wife and I have been having lots of fun playing in the mud making this new wood fired pizza/bread oven!
Following intructions from the book entitled "Build your own earth oven" by Denzel and Field (hand print press) we used leftover adobe blocks from the construction of our house soaked them and slowly built up the layers over a sand form.
The base underneath the oven is heavily insulated with empty wine bottles (we have LOTS of those:lol:) a layer of adobe mud, and then leftover saltillo tiles to act as a oven floor.
After the 1st mud layer is over the sand form a last layer 3-6 inches thick of adobe mud mixed with wood shavings act as a layer of insulation. Finally to protect it from the elements a one inch thick layer of lime plaster will hopefully protect it!
Can hardly wait to bake in it!
Will take a few weeks to totally dry out with a series of small fires.

mmmmm pizza

I can hardly wait either! I'm betting it will take some practice getting the temp just right, but I have 2 nine inch pizza stones on the way from amazon!

1st pizza will be -- light tomatoe sauce base, caramelized onions, baja goat cheese, and sun dried tomatoes and fresh basil from our garden!

I'll take pictures I promise!

Great new project paisanos!! Did you take pics of the mud oven building from the start...I would like to see how you did it from scratch and the wine bottle part too.

I love the colour of your laja there. Ours here is a paler cream colour...here the laja floor going in on our patio. It's neat we are laying laja patios at the same time but in very different locations!!

and here is the nearly finished patio from last week

oh how I would love a mud oven for pizzas!!!

Nice looking oven and patio setup!

Remember when you're done making pizzas there's still lots of heat left for cooking. We bake breads when the temp has cooled to 500-600, then put in a pork shoulder (covered in foil in a baking pan), close up the openings, and let it cook all night long with the residual heat...mmmmm!

We built our oven with firebrick, concrete, and vermiculite/cement insulation, but the adobe/saltillo is a nice touch...will the flames eventually vitrify the adobe?

Irene: if you get somebody to make a block base like we have the making of the oven is totally easy, hell if I can do it anyone can! Heres the wonderful book we used as a guide:

http://www.handprintpress.com/moreabout.htm#ovenmore

Next time we are down in colonia guerrero we will stop by your place and bring you the 20 or so adobe blocks you will need to build the oven, all you have to do is soak them in water overnight. I will u2u the no. of the guy in San Vicente that did our laja.

Shari: I like that you spell "colour" the proper way LOL! What a beautiful patio area that is WOW, we just have to get down your way maybe in the spring!
Hey, apple time will be here in a few weeks, any chance of getting a box of organic apples to you? The trees are brimming with scads of apples!

We forgot to take pics of the bottle part, heres a pretty good youtube video on how to construct an oven. We used adobe mud to bury the 2 layers of bottles we used as insulation instead.
