Baja Race on TV
I just watched a baja race special on NBC TV. They showed the race start at Coco's. Coco was shown with a huge smile on his face (probably for all the
$ he was making).
A few hours after the start of the race they had to send a medic for someone at Coco's with violent food poisoning.
Apparently one racer died when he pulled out onto the mex hwy too fast and got t-boned by a local. The local was ok.
It looked liked tons of people came in for the race. Mucho $ for the local stores and motels. Lots of locals were out to watch the race. Although they
did tear up the area and make a bunch of dust, it looked like most of the race areas were previously disturbed anyway.
They mentioned a new movie coming out in April called "Dust to Glory" about the baja race.

Say Diver,
Do you remember the name of the program? I'd like to see if it may be repeated.
A friend from Maryland e-mailed me this a.m. to say that he saw me with my friends all decked out in our "8X" tee-shirts and the KTM canopy. There
were over 50 of us at RM (race mile) 266 a few miles north of Rancho Grande.
We saw the NBC helicopter and photographed it. We also knew that CNBC planned a short segment on the race via "Bullseye".
Yes, Dust to Glory is scheduled for an April release. I got word from my daughter, son-in-law (8X this year, but 11X, I think, in the movie
which is the 2003 race), and granddaughter that the movie is awesome. They were in Santa Monica last week for a showing for the "cast and crew".
If this movie is anything like other documentaries that the Browns (father Bruce and son Dana) have produced in the past, it should be worth seeing
even if one is not interested in off-road racing.
We were monitoring "Weatherman" during the race and were aware of the pit crew member at Coco's that had the food poisoning. Apparently he was
seriously dehydrated and there was a call out for an IV. We were about ready to respond (this was before Campbell-1X had passed) when we heard a
chopper reply that help was on the way.
I think the patient recovered all right, but the only thing most of us resented in our "pit" was that he was described as "an elderly 64-yr-old" by
Weatherman. We all looked at each other to see if any of us was young enough to get below that "elderly" line...nope.

Sorry, there was no specific name that I recall. It was like a 1-hour "sports event" ie wide world of..
I got the impression from the clip they showed that the upcoming movie is more like a Tom Cruser than a documentary, but I could be wrong.

Dust to Glory is definitely not a "Tom Cruiser". It's a documentary, but focuses only on the 2003 race and then mainly on the "Iron Man" run
by Mouse McCoy that year on a motorcycle.
In the process they also work in a lot of footage of the trucks/cars, the Honda Team, and others.
If you ever saw Bruce Brown's On Any Sunday, I or II, or Endless Summer then you'll have an idea of the format.
More specifically, Dana, Bruce's son directed the movieStep into Liquid, and, though it is a "surfing movie" like his dad's ES, it
garnered rave reviews from non-surfers.
I really can't speak first-hand about D2G, but from what I've heard it's good and will attract a larger-than-off-road-enthusiast crowd.
The Browns are top-notch cinematographers.

Hi Andy, nice to have met you in person! Super neet place you have there.
The show was called world of adventure sports. It was very well done.
The trailer to D2G might give some the impression that it is a work of fiction, and some of the shots look staged. Like when the Riviera truck hits
the MOHO. But, it is all real.

on any SUNDAY ...
They showed that film at SAN DIEGO STATE every night for a week back in DECEMBER 1972. I think I saw it 6 times ....
The next APRIL ... my TWO roommates (Bob and Ruth) and myself ... rode our motorcycles from TIJUANA to CABO and back. Ruth had never ridden before
... but she had her own horse back home... After seeing that movie .... she said .... NOTHING could be as difficult as riding a motorcycle. Remember
... the road wasn't completed until DECEMBER '73.
Before that trip ... I don't think I had ever been past PUNTA BANDA. on the
PACIFIC side ...
The next SEMANA SANTA ... I made a trip to LA PAZ.
now I can't stay away ....

Hi Me No,
Think you must mean "Allen" instead of "Andy'. Andy hadn't made it up from La Paz by the time you got to Punta Bufeo, but thanks for stopping by.
It's always nice to meet new persons and put faces to "handles."
I agree that the trailer for D2G makes it look like drama. 'Course we know that there is plenty of real drama, no need to fictionalize it.
Cristobal,
Dang, we were driving down those roads in the mid-to-late sixties, but we had four wheels under us...at least most of the time. I hear a lot about
the "good ol' times" times from neighbors like Gary Leupold, Groff Moore, Bob Law, Dick Miller, et al who fill me in on what it was like to
"really" drive the peninsula. I do remember syphoning some gas out of one of my tanks to get a buy on a Bultaco a little farther down the road. Even
put a few ounces into a plastic container and he strapped it around his shoulder. Sort of a rolling Molatov c-cktail, I thought. Often wondered what
became of that guy.

Did anyone tape the NBC show
yesterday? i only got part of it . i would gladly pay 2 way shipping for a loaner cassette. and, D2G will be awesome! I watched some of Brown's crew
at RM 205 , they were doing a lot of interviews, caught one with Steve Hengefeld at the Honda pit while he was waiting for Campbell to come in. then i
think they put some of that footage in the film's trailer.
I don't know dick diddly about surfing but the Step into Liquid film is a masterpiece of videography and/or film. therefore even if you don't follow
off road racing, the D2G movie offers excellent art for the movie goer.

I saw the show - tuned into the middle of it and it was so nice that I couldn't change the channel.
What a heck of an endurance!

During the trip in '73 ... I was 22 and anything was possible ... all
three of us carried a spare GAS can .....
Now ... when I travel through the mountains SOUTH of SAN IGNACIO on my SUZUKI 500 QUAD ... I always take 4-two liters of GAS with me. My range is
about 95 miles. I can visit many RANCHO'S on a run like that. There is
NO oil injection on my QUAD so I kinda have to carry extra gas ....

i RECORDED the program. Its out right now making the rounds amongst friends. Ill see what i can do about getting copies. it was well done. I just wish
it was longer, It spotlights my favorite trophy driver. robby gordon , and his love for the sport. at the beginning of the program he states that the
only reason he races NASCAR is so that he can make enough money to race the BAJA. The video shows sal fish on his way south making a stop at cocos. I
think the death they speak of is that of a chase truck driver, having a run in with a local on the pavement. The video shows the off road .com trucks
roll... mostly dust flying. Nbc lands the helio to make sure everyones ok, and some great video of millers mobile refueling of the trophy truck( 58
MPH on the pavement topping off his tank f-18 style... AWESOME. NBC spent some big bucks and this will help the sport out.

I asked Sal at the awards banquet what he thought about all the coverage and the upcoming D2G movie. His response was something along the lines of,
"next year we can look forward to every guy on the west coast with a pick up truck trying to get into the race, but ultimately it will be good for the
sport".
