The ARB is not even in the same league as a FridgeFreeze...Mike, as you know the FF is built to mil-specs. Both of my FF have been abused ridiculously for 10 years and still running strong. The ARB does not use the same style compressor that the FF uses...plus FF customer service is second to none.

The FF owner is Jay Black, he races ATV's in the Baja 500 and Mil and he one of those guys that races that Catalina ski race at 90 miles per hour on a ski...

FF is located in San Diego right off the 5 near the 8.

Call Jay at the shop and give him the Baja discount code "desertbull"

Happy FF owners include Wild Bill, Paulina and PJC to name a few...

The ARB is okay if it's not exposed to the elements or mounted outside, inside a motorhome or belly boxes it survives but not like we use em in Baja on remote dirt roads. Like strapping it down in the back of the bed and hauling azz WB style.

Call Jay he'll hook you up!

There are good models out there today, but it's pretty hard to beat an Engel portable freezer/cooler. I had one of these back in the late 60's. A cousin still runs it on his Alaska boat to this day. Outperforms any I have ever seen since and indestructable.

The newest models run on 12 volt, 24 volt and 240 volt operation (built into the unit) as well as an automatic AC/DC changeover. You can run from a AC generator or from a solar panel.

For rough travel both on land and at sea, you can operate at up to a 30° angle....which is rare for any fridge or freezer.

How about on propane? 4Baja had one that could run on all three: propane, 12v, 110v.

i hoped Desert Bull would check in.
i have seen his in action baja mil 2003 in SQ pitting for DB Racing.
no one is harder on his "stuff" than the guys with more race proven baja miles than most anyone i know like Da Bull and Wild Bill W.!

i'll just get a new one FF and be done.

Tim when/if you are doing any off road stuff this fall and winter in the vicinity of the CA desert west of Havasu, Needles or Laughlin/bullhead give me a shout i am at the Nautical Resort on assignment thru march next year.
the party is on.
national jet ski championships in oct. also a big car show with a national draw.
thx for the input, man!

We've got an Engel and it would be pretty hard to beat, ran it all last winter as a fish freezer on 150watts of panels and 1 costco marine battery. The exterior is all steel construction.

Mike,

Here's another vote for Engel. I have had ours about 3 years and goes on every Baja Trip. It's a great freezer and has kept fillets at 0 degrees on the way home from Mulege. On the way down it's job is to keep the beer at 38 degrees. With the available thermometer, the thermometer sits next to me in the drivers seat and you can adjust the temp when necessary. Quiet too! Great product.

Ken

i'll keep all options open. there seems to be a wide range in prices from the top mfgrs.
but Engle and FF seem to be top shelf stuff.
i only need small capacity for plane and my havasu city office.

The ARB is made by Engle. There is at least one more brand that is also the same. I have an ARB and have been very happy with it for 5 years or so. As I remember, the FF was a lot more money when I bought the ARB.

I don't think the koolatron will make, or keep ice. If you need a freezer you have to pay the big bucks.:D

ARB only has 50QT as smallest. too big.
Engle goes thru dealers can't buy direct.
FF has lots of sizes i am interested in. must be top of the line tho cause price reflects that. but ya gets what ya pays for...!!

FF is on the short list for now, maybe i can score a used one before my deadline approacheth.

it's a tad too small.
plus the knot head wants $77 shipping?!! hello!! can you say buried costs? - i can buy their 48 QT model for decent $$ thru on line dealers and get free shipping. i kind of like their new model with the hard rubber bumpers.
and i am still looking at FF too.
