Logic stands on the shoulders of faith (unsteadily, on one leg).
Actually the whole thing is a three legged stool:
Logic, faith and shrimp tacos.

I am struck by the chronological and geographical proximity to this action where 31 boats and motors were taken by the Hacienda.

I think that's a pretty far stretch because the boats in this article were fisherman's pangas, not gringo-type higher-end boats. Also, the reason
given in the article was for monies owed to Hacienda....generation upon generation based on the amount!!
It doesn't seem too likely that this has anything to do with the missing gringo boats....somebody would have noticed gringo boats being neatly stacked
on a car-hauler! Me thinks most of the gringo boats were misappropriated &
motored off away from land under dark of night!

Gee...I wonder who that could be? |
I applaud for the way osprey has immersed himself into the Mexican culture and tried to understand them as individuals.
Here again there's a veiled attempt to paint all Mexicans with the same brush.

What a shame. Seems Baja is turning into a grab bag for thieves. If you can't lock up your property at night, chances are you will have seen the last
of it.
The bloom has fallen off the rose for so many here. What a shame.

Very sorry to hear this news. One cheap solution is to haul your boat out of the water everyday.

From the sound of things, he won't be worrying about it any time soon.
Do people have insurance for this type of thing?

Thanks Skip, the authorities came thru our beaches not long ago to collect boat fees (impuestos o multas?), set up shop on the beach, let the whole
town know what they were about, when and where they would be. I learned the fees they pay include boat theft insurance of some kind -- don't know
about the motor. Maybe Gnukid infers those in Las Arenas who lost their boats got desparate. I think the thieves are well organized because they cut
the big engines from the transomes -- mother boat would have to have davits or blocks and/or a lot of hands -- gotta be able to nav in the dark the
120 miles or so to San Lorenzo or beyond and find a safe way/place to offload to trucks for haul/sale.

Fishabductor, that sounds like big business to me. Don't think a shrimper would take the time or waste hull space on a product he couldn't sell
outright.
If its not where it is, its where it isn\'t.

Interesting theory, fishabductor. Saw 2 for days off the point past Flat Top in late Jan. One came in drifted, seemingly aimlessly, close to shore in
the bay for several days. No nets, no visible people on board. Wondered what they were catching...

Lots of stolen gringo boats? Cut out hulls? Shrimp boats traffic in stolen boat engines? I hate to let the cat out of the bag, but this was old
news in the 70's...sheesh.
Happened to me twice...the last time I offered a reward that was worth much more than the boat and motor. Got my revenge!

Oh yeah, got most of my stuff back..very satisfying adventure it was, too! For everyone except the crook.
I had offered a very large 'recompensa' because I don't like being made a victim and decided to turn the tables. Suffice to say, every policeman in
Baja and a few bounty hunters were looking for the guy..and to make that reward.
It only took about 2 weeks before a knock came on my door...late one Saturday night...informing me the thief was in custody...and not feeling so good.

I went in the next morning to check things out ..and to take this photo of a beaut of a shiner. One of my prizes. The van was full of my stolen
stuff and the boat, motor, electronics, fishing gear was mostly intact. The guy turned out to be a US citizen who gave his address as Vacaville, Ca.
Hey..isn't that where a certain prison is?

We were 'told' by the perp that another stolen item..an expensive movie camera setup of mine..was in a certain private citizen's home in a large town
town way south of us. I drove there the next day with the authorities and after some theatrics..I identified the camera. That was fairly easy...It
was the one with my name on it.
The fellow was only too eager to return the camera. Naturally, he had NO idea the camera was stolen.
Much later...after some gruesome hard time in a Baja prison, the perp contacted me with a heartfelt plea for help and an apology. I initaited a
request and he was subsequently taken to the border and kicked out of the country. I don't know if my reaquest had anything to do with his
deportation, but I do know he won't be back to Baja.
I am very sure he got down and kissed the ground the instant he was on US soil. I had seen him inside that prison...brrrr.
