Skeet
So what you are really trying to imply is that its OK to be racist if thats what you think.

And I'm not from Texas... and I understand what he is trying to say... how is that possible.. culture vs race... there is a difference when viewed
from a Biological standpoint...
That one wishes to pursue the discussion with only one classification of humans, which vary over time and reflect societal customs... is
understandable.. valid, not sure, perhaps true at "this" time...
Now are we into relativity... or space time continuum... or is it something to do with want .....
Just my 2 cents.. it all helps...

wessongroup; Well said!
We are People. People are Born with different Genes which affect their whole life.
Also their minds are effected by their upbring, TV, Friends, Teachers etc.
We are still looking for Keys to enable to make People Better in their Lives.
I just think that the Calling of People "Racist" is a Cop Out by the person doing the Name calling. and as it says in the Urban Dictionary Racist is
ome one who is Obsessed with thinking about the Past instead of the Future.
Now I understand the 200 year old reason for Slavery in the States, I do not understand why some People keep blaming the present People for something
that happened 200 years ago, Money Maybe?? Or is it lack Education.
Look at the differences in the Asian Areas of Singlepore, Hong Kong, China Taiwan.
Look at Mexico, Canada.

Delicately avoiding stepping on the racial stuff, I think an interesting idea Skeet has pushed on is the concept of "the quest".
I think those of born in the immediate years following WW2 were the last generation who were challenged to become a man though this quest and a trial
by fire. The literature of this bygone age, from Greek mythology to Jack London to Jack Kerouac to aboriginal/indigenous peoples all demanded men go
out and find themselves through a lonely and dangerous test. We listened to our fathers and grandfathers quest and dreamed of our own. Sometimes it
was a Hemingway-like joining of the Spanish Civil war, sometimes it was riding freight trains for a few years.
Today's kids may not. They may not have use these words, they may simply say "I'm hiking Sierra's this summer". Did they experience the hike as a
vision quest, or did they just have some alone time? I think the romance of the quest is missing and not to the benefit of our culture.

Welcome to BajaNomad, RG. You make some interesting points.
It is different today...of course. Seems like Rites Of Passage are confined to texting and driving simultaneously. [I say that in jest]
Actually we have a bunch of courageous kids joining the volunteer military today, in the face of extreme danger. Gotta give them credit for that.

golfer: Very well said.
After reading your Post and thinking about it, the People you named were all Heros to me.. I did not want to be a hero but wanted to try and do some
of the things they talked about and Experienced
The Thrill and satisfaction I got from feeding the Dolphins from my Hand on the pacific side of Baja, The Touching of a large Blue Whale that I
brought to my Panga, the swiming near the Hammerhead Sharks was all exciting and Fun and worth the time and Money Spent.
It is some what the same feeling as being involved with People, trying to figure out where they are coming from when they make Odd Statements.
It does appear that our Schools and parents are not instilling in their Kids that desire to ADVENTURE.

Whoa...I was staying out of this thread...but I just wanted to comment that this thread HAS been useful in bringing out some fascinating
concepts...AND who'da thunk, it would have brought out a new interesting player in the sandbox...so I'd like to welcome redondagolfer to the fray and
really look forward to more of your insights and philisophical posts that cause me to pause and reflect....I agree with your idea there about the lack
of romance of the quest....or self reflection missing in the new quests...gracias.

Thank you Dennis and Skeet for the kind words and welcome.
Then the question might/would be "why don't they today?" The quest is not so much about bravery as finding oneself alone with one's own dream. The
military is purported to be as well trained and competent as ever so I'm not disparaging them, but it's a different experience.
I think some of the historical quest came from an innate human desire to push the inner border, and outer physical borders. So the American experience
might have been Manifest Destiny, the indigenous people to make a man able to push onward to new hunting grounds. One of more extraordinary things
I've ever read was regarding settling the Americas by the Amerinds. Imagine the original Amerind gene pool crossing the Arctic bridge was 4 men and 13
women, their decendents travelling and settling and becoming distinct cultures, all the way to Patagonia in 12,000 years. Extraordinary. these people
were fueled by more than physical needs, they were always scanning the horizon.
My grandchildren live in Montana and have no idea, or interest, their grandmother's grandfather settled the Crazy mountains at the time of Custer,
that he had arrow wounds from encounters, lived to 104 as a working cattle rancher off the grid before solar panels and gore tex. They bounce in front
of the TV to Wii machines like kids in suburban New Jersey while their mother irons their soccer uniforms and frets about whether they should wear
helmets with this rough game.
We apparently don't want any true individuality, or hero's, or men who have seen the Golden Goat.

Shari;
I think that you are the type of person that has dreams and work hard to enjoy those Dreams.
Look at the things that you have done in the past 10 years or so.
Keep it up!
Gofer: Your Grandkids are in Montana, which I think is still a great place to Explore.
Floating down the Madison, Jefferson, Galliatin River fishing for Browns and Rainbows is an Adventure on its on. Fishing the Upper Big Hole near
Wisdom where I experiended 3 Great Big Moose standing across the Creek looking at me.

I have a small mark on my butt (I can't see it but I can feel it) which was made by a rubber arrowhead when I was just a kid. I'll be 74 years old
next month and I have been on many, many quests. I have not seen the Golden Goat but I've seen The Varmint and not many men still alive can say that.
