Do you think it's as hopeless as some of this post makes it sound? In some of my readings, I've come across the "Grand Tour" concept of a couple of
centuries past that the sons (and a few daughters) of Europe's wealthy embarked on upon graduation from whatever institution of higher learning they
came from. Often accompanied by a mentor to explain things, they toured the great cities and ruins around the Mediterranean Sea and such on a
year-long (or more) quest for enlightment.
In contemporary times, this might be equated to the U.S.-equivalent of going on a Road Trip, such as my son and his best friend did when he graduated
from High School. They drove around much of the country, visiting places of personal interest to them--which varied from Mt. Rushmore to New Orleans.
I've also known of many who take off for Europe, Asia, or South America on backpack trips after completing their university studies--embarking on
their own personal quests of discovery and understanding. I'd consider both of these examples as contemporary Rites of Passage of our youth. I'm sure
there are others that people could mention.

And I do try to be Descriptive when I refer to the Weak Minded Cry Baby Whimps. I try to use Verbs and descriptions and actions.

And Bajatripper for the challenge.I tried to use maybe and other words of self-doubt and conditionalness in my post. I personally believe what I wrote
but I'm open to language and expression of notions changing with time.
So I will use myself as an example rather than confuse myself with abstractions. I'd always hear my father and his peer group discuss their
involvement in building the Alaskan Hwy and great tales of deprivation. So my own addition to their tales was to go further north, find more ice and
snow, walk closer to the edge. I would hitchike to Alaska every summer between college semesters and work on fishing boats, for the BLM on fires,
building the Hickel hwy., etc.
These made for grand tales back in Wisconsin. If I had grown up in Fairbanks they woulda been as common place as working on a hay farm in Wisconsin.
The point? It's why we do the thing, not the absolute danger.
Later on I would explore the Nelson, Laird, Nahinni and Mckenzie rivers of BS, Yukon, and NWT alone. I would take as few supplies as possible, always
testing the edge of the experience. I would imagine the aluminum canoe I had vs. the wood canoes, the modern tent with a floor and fine netting
against the darkness the mosquitos could bring to the middle of the day when settling on my tent, that frightening (to me) motor sound a million
mosquitos could make and wonder "how did the indigenuous people, or first explorers survive?" Are the bears more or less dangerous than 100 years ago
in the middle of the night if I mistakenly make my camp in a berry patch having pulled in late in the day above the rapids. I think a person, and
their worldview, changes positively for having willingly put themselves in these places.
Maybe we'll never go to the moon again. Maybe we've discovered all the lost missions of Baja. Maybe we don't want to find and civilize the last group
of headhunters in New Guinea. Maybe we no longer want to make men who want to do something at or over the limits. It's not a good thing or a bad
thing, but it is an interesting thing.
If someone is challenged by taking the Orient Express from Vienna to Istanbul who am I to say it's not worthy?
I'm just interested in the furball of ideas and implications surrounding this topic.

Skeet/Loreto .....I was a "kid" once upon a time that was so severely judged......by strangers and some family....it changed my world. I was
different from "you rest". I talked funny...had a ponytail...nearly deaf. I believed the judgmental jerks for a long time, and then revolted. Badly.
Tough guy for years...your ex pals at the force could look me up and see bad news. Though never in Jail...just lucky! But again....due to the
darkness of childhood definitions ...It forced me to become a very successful business(s) operator, family man, and friend to all. I am tamed.
And your response to me Sir.....Highly accepted and appreciated. Turns out that you are a 100% real Baja man. A Viking's King to be able to

Back in the early eighties we made a trip to Cabo to see if we wanted to sail in. Comitan gets seasick and I run with white knuckle terror when the
boat tips so though we raced SF bay in gails we decided to camp.
We started going to the main land when we were going to be killed on any beach and found if something happened to one person it was verbally repeated
year after year as a last week thing. Toured Mx. by RV one end to the other and settled in La Paz. Is that enough back ground.
We know and love Mx.
If its not where it is, its where it isn\'t.
