SAN QUINTIN OYSTERS
Hola,
went fishing sunday out of the old mill area and told the pangero that i would like to go to the oyster farm on our way back to the landing.
no problemo ! after having a great day fishing san martin island, we bought five dozen oysters at around $ 2.25 U.S. a dozen.
i asked how to store them for the ride home to los angeles and i was told to just put them in an unclosed ice chest or a bucket with NO ICE, NO SEA
WATER, NOTHING !! they said to keep sunlight off of them and keep them in a cool location and they would keep up to 4 days and to discard any oysters
that were open. i put a towel over my 5 gallon bucket and today, monday, i shucked them and MRS. RAT beer battered and fried them and they came out
great !!!
we gave the pangero a dozen and a very good propina for going the extra mile for us.

Rat! You should be ashamed giving this great reort on us Folks that are not there to enjoy thos good Ole Baja Oysters.
Now I will have to go to Scotties in Amarillo Texas and have an Oyster Poor Boy for Lunch.

Man, I miss those SQ oysters. Up here NOB at my local oyster bar Falsa Bay oysters are $2.20 EACH! If you can sneak out of work early and make happy
hour, 4-6 p.m., they're a relatively measly $1.50 apiece. And who knows how long those puppies have been out of the water. Soon, though, I will be
bouncing down that crappy washboard road to the oyster farms myself. No better way to spend an afternoon, IMHO.

Skeet/Loreto....i am truly ashamed that MRS. RAT and i really did enjoy the oysters after i shucked 3 dozen. i gave a dozen to the pangero and we had
a dozen battered and fried at jardines saturday nite.
DanO....hope you get to san quintin soon. i'm wondering how much they would charge to have a panga from the old mill area take a person to the oyster
farm to avoid the washboard road ? another sideline business ?
irenemm....i was checked at the first and last cuota from ensenada to tijuana and again at the crossing at tecate and sent to secondary and checked
again and did not encounter any problems. they were only concerned at U.S. customs with drugs and fruits and veges.
we just beer battered a dozen and deep fried them and i ate six on the half shell. FANTASTIC !!!!!
oysters were kept in an empty 5 gallon bucket with no ice or water, just covered with a towel to keep the light off. NOT IN AN ENCLOSED ICE CHEST.

What did you catch this time of year at San Martin? Who was your panguero and what is the going rate to fish the island. I have yet to fish
the San Quintin area.

we had a choice of either going north to san martin island or south to el soccoro to fish the kelp for a minor shot at the white seabass but a good
shot at the calicos. we opted for isla san martin.
we caught lots of sugar bass, a type of rock cod, a few vermillion rockfish, big calicos to 8 pounds, one ling cod of about 12 pounds, and three
sculpin or scorpionfish which are great eating but dangerous. about four small barracuda and three big sand bass.
we wanted to target the white seabass but it's late in the season and yellowtail were off and on the bite sporatically. i read on another website that
there were tuna offshore but very sporatic as well.
we fished out of pedro's pangas on a basic older 22 foot panga with hector and it cost us $ 240.00 plus tip and fish cleaning.
i believe we were the only sport fishermen going out that day and we were pretty lucky with the weather.

woody with a view..we were hoping for the yellows to bite but didn't but a group that came in and fished the same weekend with garcia's did get a
couple of yellows along with a lot of reds and calicos.

Calicos to 8 lbs is a trip to brag about Rat Man! I've chased them for thirty years and only caught two over ten pounds. Nice downhill ride heading

hola bajabass,
yellows and calicos are my favorite fish to catch on live bait. my biggest calico prior to this was just under 5 pounds so for me, 8 pounds is a very
good fish.
my biggest yellow to date is 42 pounds at san clemente island.
i've been fishing calicos in so. cal for over 40 years but unfortunately, all the areas i fish get hammered.
if you are referring to the boat ride to the landing, it was a fairly smooth ride.

Or go to JJ's Oyster Bar in Fort Worth--they make a mean Oyster Po Boy too...best oysters I've ever had come from the Gulf of Mex (eh, the spill
notwithstanding).

I know what you mean Senor Rat. Socal is fished out and way too crowded. The kelps between Ensenada and Rosarito can have some good days, but not many
this year!
