BEWARE: Police Station north of Insurgentes

On Wednesday morning en route to La Purisima, we got the shake-down by a policeman on foot in front of the police station on the highway north of Insurgentes across from the gas station. Cop stood in the road, ticket book in hand, and motioned for us to pull over. He asked for driver's license — my husband handed him his MX license. He performed a "vehicle inspection" of all lights and turn signals on our F250 4wd truck/camper with CA plates. Try as he might, he found nothing wrong, and we were allowed to proceed into the gas station and be on our way.

This is the second time we have been stopped here by a local cop from this police station. Last year we pulled off next to the gas station to grab our small cooler with lunches from inside the camper. A cop walked across the street to us and tried to ticket us for stopping in a place not marked as a rest stop! Go figure. We talked out way out of it by demonstrating our local knowledge in conversation, and he backed down.

I'd guess this occurred in Zaragosa, 10 mi North of Insurgentes. The cop shop is right across from the Pemex there. On Monday we were passing through and were flagged to the side of the road by 2 policemen standing in the street .

Polite fellows and no "attitude", they asked to see DL and registration and wondered where we were coming from, and if we lived locally and for how long, then sent us on our way.

It's not uncommon to see the police at the roadside in this area, but on all previous trips they've pulled over Mexican plated vehicles and waved us through.

Policemen are fishermen at heart. Doesn't sound as though anyone was abused and basic culture skills played a large part in that. Let that be noted.
