Coco Cabanas ~ well.... internet is free when you're lodging with the Scalapino family:

Great folks.... Our last few trips, we've also enjoyed free clams (thanks Stephen), some free oranges and grapefruit - (thanks Barrett), and a few "free" BBQ'd fish tacos with fellow guests who came back tired from hauling in their limit of yellowtail . . . . and needed an experienced BBQ chef :) .

The many years of friendship and hospitality is also free !

Guerrero Negro ----
We have eaten twice at Don Gus in the last few months and NO wi-fi in the restaurant.

Good List

I have used wifi at Don Gus many times, the last in mid Nov. when I made several Skype calls and emails from my iphone. My boyfriend was there 2 weeks ago and although they said the wifi was working he was unable to get hooked up.

What would be the most helpful for your list- no obligation free wi-fi spots, or free wi-fi with purchase places?

Here are a few hotels I've stayed in that offer "free" wi-fi for guests:

Hotel Oasis- Cd Constitución
Hotel Marina- La Paz
CasaBuena B & B- La Paz

I'm beginning to think that "FREE" is only on request for customers in most cases.
The fire department in La Joya is an exception.

Even for customers? They need to hire a PR firm.

Frankly, they need a PR firm for more than just that!

I was wondering that since Doug's list mentioned "show card" at Baja Cactus, if that implies they charge for wifi for customers other than Nomads? Would seem they could share the PR fee with Rice & Beans.:lol:

Baja Cactus has wifi available/included for guests of the hotel. However, even if you're just passing through El Rosario (and not staying at BajaCactus), and want to check email - make a Skype call - whatever.... if you stop in and show your BajaNomad card, access will be provided gratis.

While there will obviously be exceptions, many "free" wifi hotspots provided in a public way are from a business (or businesses) offering this as a benefit of doing business with them.

In fact, in parts of the USA, people are getting arrested for not buying something:

Guests/visitors can use Vonage in our office at no charge. Ditto for wifi use. First installed Vonage in 2000 - when downtown CSL had just begun receiving DSL .. used to email back/forth w/Jeff founder with issues. Boy has that company grown!

Have used the Serenidad Hotel service many times (while eating in Dinning room).. Even made phone calls with my majic jack while Don Johnson was sitting asking about the phone service, and watching my phone ring back with incoming calls..

Wonder if you can buy a code reader to bypass these exorbitant charges? Lemme go dig around and see what I can find.
Anybody have an idea?

That is not uncommon. The major resorts figure that since you're able to pay mucho dinero to stay there, you will not complain about the extra charge. Considering that these self same places have a long history of exorbitant telephone charges, who would be surprised?
