Pesos vs Dollars right now (US & Canadian)

Just a casual observation I thought I'd share...

Exchange rate is right around 12 to 1 at the moment. However, in hindsight (and I'm not remembering where specifically, but it was multiple places) when quoted a price in dollars, the peso equivalent was at 10 to 1. So, the restaurant that the bill came to me as $20, they were good with 200 pesos.

I didn't look at the official exchange rate, but it's my understanding that the Canadian $ is now at - or near - 1 to 1 with the USA dollar... and Canadians are quite pleased with the spending strength of their own dollars right now in Mexico.

The Canadian vs USD is not anything new. As I remember they caught up to us sometime in the summer of 2009.

Pretty darn close anyway. It was close enough to have my Canadian friends dancing in the streets. Funny thing is I remember in the 80s while traveling abroad the Canadian dollar was much sronger than the USD. I was constantly reminded by my Canadian girlfriend while we were in OZ and NZ. Its OK because I made her buy the beers with her overage.

When they charge 10:1 is the 20% you gave up when they scalped you on the exchange rate the tip?

I believe it was the other way around 200 pesos was twenty dollars in other words if you had a bill for 200 pesos they would accept twenty dollars - you just lost about 20% for not paying in pesos. Jim

Some people quoted me prices in dollars. Examples: $20, $35, etc. When I asked what the price was in pesos, it was then 200 pesos, or 350 pesos, etc. With an exchange rate of 12:1, the original quotes (in dollars) were for the equivalent of 240 pesos, or 420 pesos, etc.

Guess I didn't explain this very well.
