Hulu & Netflix in the Baja

As requested by BajaBlanca & Baja.Desert.Rat

My disclaimer was in the other post..."this is the hubby's department" but after interviewing him and taking "careful notes", I believe I may have learned something!

Things That Need To Be Done.

1. Best to have 2 mbps from your Internet provider. We have Infinitum from Tel-Mex...would assume so does every one.
2. Order a "VPN" subscription which will show your computers "IP" address is in the USA and not in Mexico. This is what allows you to watch Hulu & Netflix.
3. Set up a Hulu Netflix account.

How We Have Ours Set-Up

1. We have a Toshiba Notebook computer set-up next to the TV with HDMI cable running from it to the TV. The computer sits on one of those "computer cooling pads" just so it does not over heat. I believe it is only flat screen TV's that have this connection not the old TV's...I could be wrong about this.

How To Play Hulu & Netflix

1. Log-in to your "VPN" account. Now your "IP" address shows your are in a USA city which is required by Hulu & Netflix.
2. Now log-in to your Hulu or Netflix account. Voila...you are now watching some of your favorite shows and movies.

After during his research the hubby chose "Strong VPN" http://www.strongvpn.com/ He also learned by using a "VPN" it adds an additional layer of protection. Example: it provides "Security for Hotspot Wireless Access Users" and prevents hackers from being able to see what you are doing on your computer.

Strong VPN offers a seven day free trail, while Hulu and Netflix offered a 30 day free trail. You are required to provide a credit card but at the end of the free trail if you do not want the service you just call to cancel and your money is refunded.

As much as I would like to take credit for this (VPN info)...I read about it on the Baja Western Onion a while back. That info was not as detailed but after I showed it to the hubby...who is a lot smarter then me when it comes to computer things, he started doing his research which lead to what we have now.

Hope I explained it well enough.

Karen.....My daughter is visiting from the States and we were discussing yesterday how nice it would be to access Netflix on line. Thanks. It sounds like the hurdles are minimal.....

Well that's if you are not "computer challenged" like me! However...I am trainable. I have learned how to: Turn-on, log-in and surf the topics. There are some great documentaries on the Baja we are enjoying.

I tried GoTrusted VPN, but Hulu detected it was a proxy and said to reconnect without the proxy. It may only be a matter to time before the providers discover and block the IP of your VPN.

I think the Netflix thing was discussed a couple of months ago. Can't remember if it was this forum or another Baja group, CRS, but it was found that Netflix won't send to Internet Providers outside the USA. I think.:?::?:

This is why you have to subscrib to a "VPN" service. Once you sign-in to that account...your computer now has an "IP" address in the USA. All I know is..."it works". We watched "Bottle Shock" last night...a movie for wine drinkers.

Blanca...how about one of those gifts "to him but for you"!

TwoGringos...how long was it before you received your messesge of "connect without the proxy"?

We plan to enjoy it while it last...along with all of our friends that ask if they can come watch a movie with us.

Immediately upon trying to start a download. Clearly they had previously determined that the IP was a proxy. I think one would need a private VPN as traffic to a public one would soon be noticed.

I've had no luck masking my baja IP to get Hulu or netflix to work either. They alwayy seem to detect the masking and refuse access.

This is the website we have subscribed to.
http://strongvpn.com/

In the top right hand corner is the customer log-in box. After logging-in you are now on their USA "IP address". This is what "Hulu/Netflix" sees and allows you to watch they programs.

If I go to Hulu/Netflix without logging-in through http://strongvpn.com/ I too get a message:
Sorry, currently our video library can only be streamed from within the United States
