Where the dogs in heat perhaps....being that both took off? I'd check with all the nearby owners of dogs
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

Good theory but both are altered. They took off North towards the fish camp is what I heard.

Mmmm ya right bout that then
I got five Australian Shepherds here on the farm.
They run off in a chase for:
Rabbit
Anything that "moves quickly".
Other dogs.
Bet these pups just went after something up a ravine there (I know the area well).
Hate stories like this.

Dogs are found!
They did indeed take off north toward the fish camp and stuck themselves on a ledge/cave on the bluffs south of Percebu. It took two days and Leo the
fisherman from the camp spotted them and alerted the owners.

The whole story...

Subject: RE: dogs
In case some of you are wondering if I dropped off the face of the earth in 2011, I’m still here. Right now “here” is at our place in Baja at Rancho
Percebu. We arrived here Tuesday 12/28/10 and planned to stay until 1/3.
Probably one of the worst things that could ever happen to Franco and I did. We came down with our 4 shelties and 3 boxers and 2 shelties that we
have had with us each X-mas thru New Years for several years. Their owners live in the LA area and visit their family in northern CA each year after
Christmas and we keep the dogs for them. Both of these dogs were born at our house and we have gotten to be very fond of the family that owns them.
On this last Sunday 3 of our dogs and the two “visitors” went down on the beach in front of our house to play. This is something that happens several
times a day. I got called to the garage to help Franco lift something and when I went back around the house about 5 minutes later I could see the
dogs had travelled north on the beach and were playing in the tide pools. I gave a whistle to bring them back closer and did a double-take! My heart
stopped as I only counted 3 dogs coming back up our hill. Emi and Frisby were missing. I put our three into the house, jumped up onto the quad and
went down to the beach and headed north in the direction that my three came from. I was able to see the north bound tracks of all the dogs and they
all ended up about ½ mile north in from of a local fisherman’s shack. He came out and told me that he has seen 5 dogs playing on the beach for awhile
and then 3 headed back south and two remained playing for a few minutes and then went up a path to the bluff overlooking the beach and they too headed
south.
With that I went back to the and put the word out over the radio for everyone to keep an eye out for the two little shelties. Pretty soon there were
many people in quads and 4 wheel trucks searching everywhere. The search continued into the dark and we finally had to give up. The next day,
Monday, the owners sent me photos which I sent to my son, Jody. He created a flyer which I printed at our friends house. We do not have internet
service at our house and Jim and Bev Kasey have been so generous and loving in their help with searching and fielding emails for me. Then Franco and
I and another dear Baja friend, Ligia Porush, went into San Felipe with use to start papering the town with flyers. Ligia is Spanish speaking and was
really helpful in communicating with shop owners and people on the streets. We put out about 100 flyers and also spoke with several friends who have
connections and businesses in town. They helped spread the word too and gave us ideas of other animal groups to contact. One is ZAPP, the spay and
neuter group. Their rep, Steven, told me of a sheltie a man had lost over a month ago that was found and returned to him a week ago!
One never knows if a dog might make it to the hard road and be picked up by someone and taken to town. Also, a lot of visitors travel north and south
on the beaches and might have picked up our dogs. There were so many possibilities to cover that if I had not had the help of Franco’s logical mind
and the experience of our friends that live here full time, I would have been at such a loss.
We got home that night and I went back out looking for them until dark. No luck. I trudged back to the house walked in and looked at my dogs and
finally started to cry. I thought I would never stop. I pulled myself together after getting a good face-wash from Bella and Duffy and determined
that I was not leaving San Felipe until I found them.
Tuesday went on forever and still no word but we did get a lot of calls from folks we did not know to say they were out looking and our friend, Chuck
Cherry, put out the word on the Baja Nomad site. That brought in a few more calls from friends in Yucca Valley who said they would monitor that site
in case anyone posted info that might lead to finding the dogs. I went to bed that night and finally gave up on sleep at midnight and went to the
living room and watched TV until the sun came up.
During the night I kept hashing over what plan of attack I sound take on Wednesday and all I could really think of was bundling up and walking north
on the beach with all of our dogs. So, after Franco got up this is what we did. I was so convinced that the pups were up on that bluff hiding in the
brush or a swale. My hope was that the barking of our maniacs on the beach would draw them out. We were out for about an hour and went home.
I can’t remember ever being so “low”. Franco went to a friends house and I did some cleaning. Suddenly there was a tap on the window and it was Leo,
the fisherman who had seen the dogs initially before they disappeared. He was on the beach shelling and kept checking the bluff as he walked south and
suddenly saw them on the bluff face on outcrops. ( One of our friends had also gone to Leo’s shack on Tuesday to ask about the dogs and spoke to Leo.
He said that there was no sign of the dogs there and that Leo had not seen them either.) I could not reach Franco because he did not have his phone
with him or the radio so I called a neighbor and asked him to get Franco to come home ASAP and bring the bus north on the beach to the bluff.
Leo got on the back of my quad and we went roaring up the beach. As we approached the bluff I kept looking at the top for them and did not see
anything. My heart sank. But Leo kept saying “No, not up there…THERE!” Then I spotted the blue girl, Emi about ¼ from the top in a shallow cave.
About 50 feet from her was Frisby on another shelf, about ½ way up the cliff face. This whole section is a chalk like material and almost impossible
to climb. Leo was able get close enough to Frisby to grab some hair and pull him into his arms. Then he handed him down to me. By now both the dogs
were barking and whining with joy to see me. Then Franco and our friend Bob arrived in the bus but we could not get to Emi so Franco went back to the
house and got a ladder. He returned quickly and was finally able to maneuver close enough to grab Emi and bring her down. The dogs were so happy to
see me and Franco and I was surprised and relieved to see that both were in perfect shape, clean, and each one only had one burr each in their hair.
We got them home and they weren’t even thirsty. They were hungry, but, then, these two are like mine and are always hungry.
After we all sat around and played with them and considered everything, we thing that someone got them and was keeping them. They ended up leaving
them where they found them rather than get caught with them. I think that the dogs were up on the bluff and heard our dogs on the beach and worked
their way back to the edge and tried to get back to the beach to come home and got stuck midway.
Whatever transpired between Sunday and Wednesday the dogs are non the worse for ware. They are happy, clean, and did not seem in the least bit
stressed once they got off the cliff face!!
We will be heading home tomorrow to turn them back to their parents and the three boys who love them so dearly. I can tell you that the fear and
grief that I have suffered during this ordeal was crushing. There were times I did not think I could take another breath. Knowing this I could not
begin to imagine how the dog’s family must feel. I am sure there are no words to describe the sadness, helplessness and fear that went through until
I could call and let them know their fur children were safe and sound.
So, that is our saga for the start of 2011. After sucking it up and making that first call to tell the owners that BOTH their dogs were lost, I know
that nothing can happen in the future that will be more difficult for me to do. There is no doubt in my mind that God is looking after me and those
that I love and that I am blessed with the most wonderful friends in the world.
I love you all.
Lauren

Man Lauren, You got me tearing up with your story. Penny and I are both happy that it turned out the way it did. Once again this shows that most baja
people are the best in the world. When bad things happen I want to be in Baja.

Ditto's... plus the guys got to be dogs for a couple of days... out running free, no leash ... just running around..
Helps their personality .... they really mellow out a lot... getting to be loose and meet all kinds of people and see all kinds of things...
Chase squirrels and all the rest... good for a dog.. IMHO
