Prosthesis for Enrique
Hola Nomads , I received the following email and I thought I might share this:
Dear Paul:
The heart adventure with Itzel Zaragoza is almost over. While she will need
another follow up visit with a doctor, everything is looking great.
My problem now is to find a prosthesis for a Tijuana man named Enrique
Hernandez. Progressive Orthopedics offered a prosthesis for the medicare
price of $ 3,800.00. Enrique had gone to San Vicente and Angel Baez but
that does not appear to be working out. Carlos Valenzuela has seen
Enrique.
I spoke to the Barr Foundation. In order for them to donate supplies, they
require a donation from a Rotary Club. I have asked one individual to
contact his Rotary but he has already indicated that their budget is very
tight. Do you have any contacts with any Rotary Clubs in San Diego that I
could approach to see if they could help? Can you think of any other way
that a prosthesis could be secured for Enrique Hernandez?
I have spoken to Enrique and he has little in the way of funds to offer. I
will contact a friend of his to see if his offer from last year might still
be available. I contacted another individual last week about a donation but
I have not gotten a response. My organization paid for two heart
operations last year and things got very tight at the end of the year. I
still have some follow up to pay for as well as commitments that I made on
education for some 25 school kids.
Any ideas you might have, I am willing to pursue.

Hello Andy, I do not have any contact with the Rotarians in San Diego since I live near San Luis Obispo. The La Balandra Rotarians of La Paz are
also on a very tight budget so I don't think that they would be able to help monetarily either. However, you might try contacting Dr. Alejandro
Aguirre Chavez, the secretary of the club and our contact for the clinics we have down there. We could easily make a prosthesis for Enrique, as we
have all available parts and supplies at our facility in La Paz. All of the prosthetic and orthotic systems we fabricate are completely free to the
patients. Is Enrique an above or below knee amputee? Does he have any other conditions besides the amputation (i.e.., massive scar tissue on the
residual limb[stump])? Our spring clinic is scheduled for Feb. 28 - March 11, 2011, but I am hoping to go down two weeks early to organize our
fabrication laboratory and build cabinets for all of the extra parts we presently have stored in a warehouse down there. Does Enrique have the means
to get to La Paz - perhaps via bus? Or maybe, if I end up driving down, he could ride with me and return to Tijuana on the bus? Also, another
thought just occurred to me, my neighbor's son and his wife are both involved in the Atascadero Rotary Club, so I'll Cc them a copy of this letter. I
will also post this on a couple of Baja forums, and maybe some folks could donate to help Enrique. Good luck and please keep me in the loop as time

More info on Enrique:
Hi Andy, I noticed the picture of Enrique after I responded to your email. I didn't know that bus fare would be so pricey. As far as time spent in
La Paz, barring any interruptions, we could fabricate and train him to use a below knee prosthesis in 2 days. A less desirable option would be for me
to cast and measure him in Tijuana, make the prosthesis in La Paz, and deliver it on my return. The first option is the best because sometimes the
socket or liner must be adjusted and the proper machinery is in La Paz. The Baja Nomads may be of some help, see: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=50303
They may generate enough funds for bus fare and hotel/meals while Enrique is in La Paz.
Once he is fit with the prosthesis, he MAY be able to have follow up visits for ongoing care/adjustments at the Flying Sam's clinic at the Los Pinos
ranch in San Quintin, but this would have to be scheduled in advance as a prosthetist is not always present at these clinics. (Ongoing care is must
for amputees as atrophic changes to the muscles create a need for socket adjustment/changes as the amputee matures). See: http://www.flyingsamaritans.us/

Commitment is back again. This time we are working with Paul Boe to get a prosthesis for a man named Enrique Hernandez. He has a small food stand
in Tijuana and is supporting a wife and 3 kids who are all in school and doing well.
I received this contact from a man I used to work with when I was with Maxell-Hitachi in Tijuana (CD/DVD). The contact has offered to help as well.
Enrique lost his lower leg to diabetes. My friend thinks very highly of him and indicates that with a complete leg he will be able to do more for his
family.
Paul Boe is now considering helping him in La Paz. Commitment has already received almost $ 500.00 in private pledges to help this man.
Commitment worked with Itzel in El Rosario for her heart operation. I am happy to report that she is doing very well.
Commitment has since been approached by a family of a 8-month boy also living in El Rosario, his name is Sergio. He has a very serious heart
condition. He will likely need open heart surgery. The good news is, the boy may qualify to be operated on in Mexico City. With the help of the
pediatric cardiologist Azucena Murillo in Tijuana and Antonio Munoz, we are trying to schedule an appointment for the boy with the General Hospital in
Tijuana to see if this young boy could qualify for Mexico City.
During a recent visit to the Sierra de San Francisco, I met a 3-year girl named Guadalupe de Jesus Arce Arce. She has since visited Dra. Murillo as
well. She has an opening between the two heart chambers, known as an Atrial Septal defect. The size of the opening is 6mm. Dra. Murillo will
monitor this young girl. It is hoped that the opening will close naturally. Commitment is prepared to arrange for surgery should it become
necessary.
For now, the major item is Enrique. Commitment is determined to help find a solution for him so he may have a better quality of life. You can donate
