Truth In Advertising?


Seems like the media loves to jump on unsubstantiated allegations. While it may not be gospel, if not true, it would be monumentally embarrassing-

In today's LA Times there is a full page ad in section one headlined "Thank You For Suing US"

Signed at the bottom by Taco Bell President Greg Creed, it explains that their beef taco recipe contains 88% USDA- inspected beef. Claiming that plain ground beef tastes boring, it goes on to list 3% water, 4% spices (salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, sugar, garlic powder and cocoa powder.) Then, 5% of what they did not call, but I will call extenders-(oats, caramelized sugar, yeast, citric acid and "other" ingredients)...

Perhaps they may not be to everyone's liking, but 88% beef is a far cry from those lawsuit allegations. Besides, I imagine no one who might venture to make their own ground beef tacos would add a bunch of seasoning ingredients too.

Also, the chains are pretty much limited to beef and chicken. You can't get Tripas, Cabeza, Lengua etc. As for crunchy, that comes from a pre-made "shell" that was invented to imitate a "Taco Dorado" (fried taco) as is common in Northeast Mexico. I prefer a tortilla, corn or flour. If I want crunchy, I get a Tostada.

While they don't compare to a good fish taco, I've always enjoyed the Taco Bell fare. I've taken my Mexican wife to Taco Bell at least once per trip on our visits north of the border, and she enjoys the food, too.

You were reading the ingredients list from their PR department advertisement, I was reading from the actual product label. :?::?::?:

The gov't makes them print the actual ingredients on their label. The devil makes them print ads to cover it up. I'm SURE the Taco Bell lawyers will say "85% of that 35% is real beef" LOL

Oh wait! I think I see where this is going. Is that image you "almost" posted from a package of a frozen retail product that's sold under the Taco Bell name? Me thinks the ad that they place in the papers was dealing with the food served at their restaurants.

Taco Bell prepares nothing fresh in-house. Everything comes from a central commissary with an ingredients label on it. Even their sour cream comes to the units in caulk tubes. The label says: "Packaged exclusively for use by Taco Bell and it's franchisees" Sounds like restaurant food to me, not retail. You can see it close-up here:

Ok. But that site does list beef as ingredient nukber one. And we all know that by law ingredients must be listed in order of content. That and the fact that per your link, the reference is made in the text to what the lawsuit alleges.

Sure it does. Beef is listed first as the number one ingredient (although just 35% of the total), Oats is number two. The label is hard to read I'll admit. They still taste good and everyone needs fiber- who cares what's in them? right? I'm sure if you drop by Taco Bell they'll plop down the 8 pound package and let you read the label up close.

si, a lot of talk about garbage Mexican food. I can't believe Taco Bell even survives in the USA with so many cities now having authentic taco stands set up by real Mexicans. I guess it's the same as McDonalds or In-n-Out Burger or 5 Guys. Clearly there is a quality and freshness difference. I'll take any taco joint in San Diego county with a 'TO's" in it over a Taco Bell, but that's just me. Different strokes for different folks...

BTW: Isn't the actual product label shown in the photo the definitive answer to this? If Taco Bell has falsified their food product labels, they will have more PR problems ahead to face. Why not just admit it's a blend of 36% Beef and other ingredients that fulfills our customers taste demands". Who cares what's in it if people like it? But you guys know me- print the truth or suffer the consequences... :) It's only Oats, could have been horse.

I concur. My wife is a real Mexican, not a "pocho" like myself, and she digs the Jack-in-the-box tacos over TJ tacos anyday and twice on sundays.

Yeah, and like someone posted, I wish I knew what type of "meat" jacks uses in their tacos. I sure looks weird and has a weird consistency.
