Rattlesnake Avoidance for dogs

Spending most of my time in Baja in the hills/mountains I decided to do two things for my dog before taking her there again. I got the rattlesnake vaccine and took her to rattlesnake avoidance training. The vaccine cost me $36 for the first shot which included an exam. The second shot was $14. The avoidance training was $80 and I think it was well worth it. It's a shock collar training method. They use live, muzzled rattlers. I was apprehensive about it. I had viewed some video on youtube and some of the shocks were very strong and it made me nervous. My dog is a great dog and I hated the thought of her being shocked that hard, but I discussed it with the trainer and he assured me he didn't think it was necessary to do maximum shock. So he put the collar on and a long lead and set a snake out for her to sniff. She was constantly looking at me so was practically standing on it when she finally noticed it and immediately sniffed it, nose touching. He shocked her and it got her attention and she jumped but not like I'd seen in videos. Then he led her up a hill to a planted skin and she didn't notice it so he showed her and when she sniffed and shocked her again. Then back down to where his snake handler had placed an new snake and she avoided it, so, that was it. I guess the only way I'll know if it worked will be to see her avoid one. Hopefully we won't run into any but we have before so I feel much better being as prepared as possible. So, I just thought I'd share the experience. I head over the border in the morning for 3 weeks. Probably too early for snakes, better safe than sorry. Here's a pic of a snake from last year.

I hate Rattlers!

I am associated with a Kennel in East County of San Diego. I sometimes am the dog handler for Tracy Presson as she works her magic with the dogs going through a course we set up with live snakes. We always ask the owner to get out of sight as the distraction of the dog looking for them and not sniffing around its environment.
You will need a refresher every year around this time as we come into snake season. You can see more on the website at www.highonkennels.com
