New La Paz goverment wants your opinion

As you all know, we just had elections here in Baja sur. Here in La Paz, our new elected mayor Esthela Ponce has asked me about ideas on how to improve communications and or services with the local foreign community. So this is your chance to offer your ideas on things you would like to see from the new goverment. I already told her it would be a good idea to set up a bilingual office that could offer assitance and advice on how to deal with payments, permits, etc etc

Having only been here for a few months, the first and only thing that comes to mind is street signs! I have most of the main streets figured out, but chase my own burro in circles looking for places on the smaller streets.

I would second the idea on putting back some of the street signs. My last time there, it was almost impossible to figure out where you were unless you had a map and counted streets. Years past I could remember finding a lot more signs, but I think they left for many different reasons and just never got around to putting them back up.

The other thing that would be great would be a web site for the city to list all of the things going on and general information.

I would like to see more effort made towards graffiti removal. We find that painting over it as soon as it happens is effective. I'm not pleased with companies that let their properties get covered like this major name car rental company let's it's wash lot wall become an eyesore for the neighborhood it's in.

I agree. I can drive past 10 streets in a row on Altamirano and not one sign. This would be good for visitors and residents alike. I have been here 2 plus years and still don't know all the names of the streets as I drive past STREET SIGNS ARE MOST NEEDED.

Just when you think you have jumped through all the hoops to start/continue improvements to your dream lot PROFEPA or another agency steps on you with a fines for not complying or filing for something else. It's really frustrating and has turned a lot of buyers away. If there was a site where property owners and prospective buyers could obtain a definitive check list of what is required and who to contact it may make the process a little less daunting.

1) What Russ (and everyone else) has said;

2) An English-language digest of the most important local news, perhaps a couple of pages printed weekly in one of the local periodicos. (I can read a textbook in Espanol, but find newspaper-Spanish to be nearly incomprehensible).

3) A cessation of building permits for new construction until our water problem is solved.

And Jesse, be sure to thank her for thinking of us . . . we appreciate it greatly.

With all due respect, I just don't think something like that would be a responsibility of the government.

That said, just perhaps the new mayor has a vision about the foreign community and seeks to expand it.

How about firing the traffic cops that cover the La Paz to East Cape bypass road. Every year I get stopped usually in both directions. No, I dont pay the mordida, but it really makes me not want to spend time in the city.

Does anyone know of a form to send reports or questions about odd behavior in the city-ayunatamiento directly to anyone willing to receive or check into what is going on, it would be helpful if one could send video, documents, photos evidence in relation to odd actions by those claiming the authority of the city to cause false problems.

Posting here or directly to Jesse is great, but something more direct is better.

The elected mayor understands that ALL taxpayers deserve the attention of the city goverment, and is thinking of ways to improve services.

The expats in La Paz (and probably in all other Mexican cities) do an incredible job of reaching out to their Mexican neighbors, especially the less fortunate ones. I think it's a HUGE gesture on the part of the new government to seek input from us. We all grumble about this problem or that, but here's a chance to open a meaningful dialog with the people who control many aspects of our lives. Those of us who aren't (yet) Mexican citizens are frequently warned to stay away from local politics and to keep our opinions to ourselves but Municipal President-elect Ponce has reached out - let's meet her half way with some positive feedback!

Actually, what I proposed, "an English-language digest of the most important local news," was done years ago, written by an expatriate Gringa and printed as I recall in El SudCalifornio. It was a popular feature but made the mistake of telling the truth one too many times and the city fathers had it killed.

Governments may not have the responsibility to write the news but they do have a responsibility to not hinder its collection and reporting, and as taxpayers we have the right to know what's going on in our community.

In the USA we have bi-lingual ballots, directional signs, dead-tree publications and over 5,000 Spanish-language radio stations, all of which involve government sponsorship or control in one way or another. Why can't Mexico reciprocate even a little bit? Why do all the concessions to further mutual understanding have to be made by the USA?

Does anyone know of a location to send reports of impropriety in the city ayuntamiento? For example obra publicas, building permits, false inspections demanding money etc... and of course where can reports of police corruption be sent, including video, photos and documents? Please? This would help greatly.

Do you think TV Azteca and colectivopericu,wordpress.com are the best sites to support ciudanos?
