Caravan heading north as I'm heading south with burro, Misión. Lots of friendly waves, sounding of horns, and snapping of pictures.

I’ve enjoyed the campsites and campfires of caravaners over the years – and have enjoyed getting to know the folks. I respect the challenges and responsibilities of their mode of transport. Probably not how I’d ever want to travel Baja…

But then again, most people wouldn’t care to hike solo 1000 miles with a burro either.

A Baja Road Trip without Caravans?

Say it ain't so!

Hey, it's all part of the Baja experience. If they disappeared, I would miss caravans on the Baja Road. After all, it's just another great thing to b-tch about...right?

....NOT!
;)

I've said this before about caravans on the Baja Road...but here goes again for the sake of this thread:

Please note that these are MY personal experiences with caravans on the Baja Road. Yours may be quite different, and I respect the opinions formed from those.

In all the years I've driven the paved Road to Baja Sur..(from when it was built in 72-73 and made available for caravan adventure)... I have never been unreasonably inconvenienced by caravans, nor found them to be rude or unsafe drivers.

On the contrary, most people who drive these oversize vehicles are generally far better drivers than some others..having had to handle thier longer rigs in many different driving situations. In fact, many large rig drivers have taken training for CDL licenses. In some states, it's required. Indeed, I'm a avid CDL RV driver having made dozens of trips across this continent.. and know of what I speak about 'situations'. I have killed nobody yet...and most importantly...I have not let the bad drivers, drunks and speeders kill me!

Unfortunately, I have squashed a jaywalking salamander or two. :( ..but who really misses a salamander or two?
(I don't dare mention the happy, frolicking chipmunk family crossing the road in Yellowstone Park...groan..ugh.)

In over 150 round-trips from Mulege to San Diego, I've lost count of the many fatal car, sem-truck, and bus crashes I have personally come across. Horrible memories. I have yet to see a single crash involving caravans, let alone any fatalities, although this probably has happened somewhere?.. after all, I have other things to do besides driving up and down the Baja Road..like taking photos and writing trip reports on this forum.

Here's over 100 Airstreams parked next to Posada just a couple years after the pavement went through our area...winter of 1972-1973. The only trouble they caused was being too friendly and spending way, way too much money in the local stores...thereby robbing some anti-caravan folks of some juicy 'gossip'.

Definition of Baja adventure: ..that term has as many definitions as there are personalities involved.

Ahh...I feel much better...Cleansed, I might say....end of rant.

Now..back to the b-tchin'...Jeez ..dont'cha just hate those damn long caravans? ;D

I believe that was a Wally Byam get together. I've seen that photo before.
Thanks Roger.

Most likely was, Dennis. And yes, I've posted that photo a few times on BajaNomads, among other RVing forums. There was a whole chapter of Baja folklore started about caravans back then. None of which was factual.
