Border Patrol's Hwy 86 Salton Sea Checkpoint
I hate that check point! It takes longer to get thru it than crossing the border! Our illustrious Homeland Security dudes ought to staff up and open
the 2nd lane! The one in San Clemente normally has all the lanes usually open and the one on I15 leading to Temecula is closed! Maybe it's time to
write to our repective Senators ans squak!

Went through the Salton Sea check point on Saturday, it was closed. Took
me an hour at the Calexico East crossing though. :fire on't generally cross on a
Saturday, but had business to attend to Friday in Baja.

Closed is GOOD.
In the pre-911 days, it was usually closed more often than not. Since that time, there have only been a few times it hasn't been open. If it were
not so much farther, I'd take 111. At least there isn't a line there as a rule.
I haven't seen anything lately on those "interior" checkpoints, but back when I was keeping a sailboat in San Diego, I sometimes found myself stuck at
the Hwy 15 checkpoint for over an hour. There was some discussion over their effectiveness in the S-D Union amid suspicion that they didn't really
accomplish much. Adding to that suspicion was the fact the the Feds REFUSED to break down their statistics in a way that the individual checkpoints
could be studied.
Close them and send the agents to the border where they'll be more effective.

I was driving south on 15 March 2011 and the northbound lineup looked to be about one mile long. Crazy. Unless they had a tip to look for something.

A PORTION of the lineup
That was just A PORTION of the lineup that I photographed. It measured about ONE mile on the odometer. I have no idea how long, but 10-15 minutes
sounds long to me. This is an INTERNAL checkpoint WITHIN these United States. I bite my tongue here on matters related to the 4th amendment to the
US Constitution.

About Ten Minutes. Something of a recent record.
The spouse is concerned everytime we go through there because it P-sses me off so much.
Other than the DOGS, the MOST irritating thing is when they decide to start looking through an Eighteen-Wheeler trailer right there in line bringing
the whole business to a halt. They "should" pull them aside, but PR is not a concern and they appear to enjoy rubbing it in.
Speaking of which, crossing at the Garita Oriente, as we arrived NEXT in line, the guy holds up his hand, walks out and drops his cone and walks over
to the adjacent kiosk where THAT agent had dropped his. They then engage in about Five-Minutes of Jovial talk with a lot of smiling before switching
positions. To what PURPOSE ? Quien Sabe ? MORE great PR.
FINALLY, as the agent begins his "Are you bringing back any .....", I said "I have NOTHING on the list. I DO have two Tecate Caguamas......" He
holds up his Index Finger and says "WAIT until I'm Finished" and then resumes his recitation from the beginning. NO was still the answer, but he was
happy.
JEEZ.

I get steamed every time I have to go through that checkpoint, too. Most times, there's a group of 3 to 6 agents standing in a group having a
laughing good chat while one agent works the one lane. There's no reason they can't run two lanes there, as there's always plenty of "manpower" just
standing around BSing whenever I come through. And I agree that vehicles could and should be moved to the side for inspections instead of holding
everyone in line up. If it weren't for the fact that I would be holding up everyone behind me, I'd ask the agent why they don't do this when it's my
turn.

hey, union workers gets breaks, too. or haven't you heard? on my jobsite they get a 3pm break! it takes longer to get down off the roof and over to
their container than they actually sit and eat.
we call it "snack and nap time!"

The US Border Patrol should take tips from the Hwy3/ Hwy5 Mexican Army checkpoint on The San Felipe SCORE 250 start day.
All 5 lanes open, taking in 4 vehicles at a time per lane, for 20 inspections in the time it would normally take to do one.
The internal USBP checkpoints ARE unconstitutional.

Close the Damned thing down and ship the officers to the Border.
But, they won't. And, they won't make any changes to improve the Flow because THEY DON'T CARE and they have almost absolute powers.
P-ss them off and see how long they'll keep you there. And, there's NOTHING you can do.

Ever since the US Border Patrol became part of Homeland Security (which enjoys unlimited budget, powers and considers itself sancrosact) it's gone
down hill. It's bad enough to deal with the long lines at the border, don't give a sh-- attitudes, and ineptness. It fries me to see an agent spend 5
to 10 minutes on one car. Send them to secondary if they suspect something or the documentation is weird! They really ought to 6 Sigma that
organization. There is alot of room for IMPROVEMENT. As to the internal checkpoints - they ought to shut them down and move officers and resources to
the border. But again, Homeland Security is running the show and that will never happen. I wonder what our founding fathers would have to say about
it?

I drove from Texas to California two weeks ago, I can't recall the number of checkpoints I went thru...I was amazed at the one on I-8 coming over the
Laguna Mtns.---they had a sign up listing what they had accomplished and it was pretty pathetic, considering how much they've inconvenienced folks.
maybe their ulterior motive is the terrorism issue (?).
