A Vegetarian (What?!) Baja Dog
Max (for Maximilian, the French Emperor of Mexico), our German Shepherd, was not getting to a healthy weight, not matter how much we fed him, in fact,
he vomited up his meals.
He scratched himself to the point taking his fur off to bare skin. He chewed his tail down to a bloody surface.
He was in agony.
It wasn't fleas or ticks or worms or anything else obvious.
Our Rosarito vet took blood samples to a U.S. lab for analysis. What did it cost? A lot.
The results came back showing that our dog is not allergic to corn or wheat, which is what I had feared.
He is not allergic to pollen or grass, either.
He is allergic to MEAT.
With every meal, I feed the dogs a soup made up of meat and vegetables. I had been poisoning my dog.
Now he eats dry dog food only, with water added to moisten it and he is much better.

Jan - glad you found out what was bothering your dog. One of our dogs also has a scratching problem and we can't pin it down to anything obvious
either. So now I'm wondering about the possibility of an allergy. But there is one thing I don't get concerning your findings....doesn't dry dogfood
also have meat in it??? Is the dry meat somehow different?

Max is eating dry food where the majority of ingredients are wheat and soy flour. There is some bone meal in the mix, but, based on the results, it
is not triggering a reaction.
He is no longer frantically scratching and biting at himself.
Also, he is a lot more calm in his reaction to sounds and other kinds of things, like flashing lights, that made him go crazy before.
The parts of his body that he had chewed bloody are are healing and and the fur is growing back.
Keeping my fingers crossed that you find a solution for your dog.

Thanks Jan - It's great to hear that Max is improving and that you've found food that works for him. Our rottie's problem is not as severe as Max's
was, but now I'm thinking of changing around some of her food to see if that makes a difference.

our dog Rex has developed something of a rash as well - he has lived here all of his 5 years and suddenly - out of the blue - he has a red rash on his
skin (not all over but in patches) and he is scratching himself til he bleeds .... and the fur is gone ... he took meds which his vet recommended, for
15 days, to no avail.
food has not changed. not ticks. not fleas. what could it be ???????????????????????????????? 
any input appreciated.

I will turn this over to my good friend who is a Vet but I am sure he will ask what meds. and dosage was he on that did not work?

Our dog has bad joints in his hips... plus had the itching and he was had developed the nervous habit of licking his paws till red..
We started giving him sweet potatoes this last thanksgiving... and notice a big change in his movements.. and a change his his itching and licking in
his paws..
It also help his digestion a great deal, he will eat a lot of anything, but getting rid of all was a hard thing for him... the sweet potatoes
(additional fiber) made his "stools" very easy, plus they are an a day glow yellow color.. so much easier to see, day or night ... to pick up rather
than step in ...

Another "treat" which has help a great deal... Salmon which the native Alaskans used to feed their sled dogs... high in Omega-3's and a many other
very good things which can be used by the dogs .. would imagine many other fish would provided much the same..
Has helped with our dogs movements... and his coat... over the past 5 months
Hope this helps others ... as it sure helped us with our dog "Bear" .. A 7 year old Australian Sheep dog

Our big old yellow lab (approaching 15 yo) will eat absolutely anything. Besides the logical meat options she likes pasta, pancakes, pizza, potatoes,
beets, carrots, celery, lettuce, grapes and anything else even slightly considered edible...

what Rex took was: TERBINAFINA for 15 days ... absolutely no change in his sores, as a matter of fact, they seem to be spreading to other parts of his
body.
