Our case may have been unique, but I don't think there's a time issue for the thumbprint & signing. Get your renewal application & fees in sometime within the month prior to expiration, and sign & print at any time thereafter- just don't leave the country. We couldn't pick ours up right away because we were in Tecate for 6 weeks.

We just returned from CSL INM office. After reading some of the above postings, that you are suppose to start your FM renewal one month before the expiration date...we were very concerned. We have to make a quick NOB trip next week and will be back in CSL eight days before our FM 3 "legally" expires.

For those of us that use CSL INM office, this info is straight from Josefina...who is the go to person!
"As long as you come into the INM office before your FM 2/3 expires you will not be fined. You can even come in the same day your FM 2/3 expires and you will not be fined. If you come in the day after your FM 2/3 expires you will be fined. You can still renew your FM 2/3...it will cost you more because of the fine."

Just to make sure there was nothing "lost in translation...English to English", I said to Josefina:
"OK, we are leaving on May 19th but will be back on May 24th so if we come to the INM office on May 25th we can start the renewal that day even though it will take at least two weeks for INM to process their paperwork which will be after our June 3rd expiration date, yes?"

Again, her answer was the same. She told us "do not start your renewal today as you would have to get permission to leave the country and pay a fee at the bank."

We are familiar with the permission letter and paying the fee at the bank so we will wait to start our renewal on May 25th.

My disclaimer is..."this is the way CSL INM does it!"

Probably 100% true, Jorge, at least today. I saw it go differently when someone I knew peeed off someone from INM. He presented his Tourist Card and the agent said he wasn't qualified to use that document since he had a house and obviously wasn't a tourist.

Nothing is for sure in Fantasyland.
