Vaccination? Didn't know there was one. My vet here says the standard procedure is to let the venom run it's course. Dogs, unless weak, will live
through it. I saw this happen with a neighbor's mutt.

Dennis, the vaccination is a series of three shots--one a month if I remember, and then a booster every six months.
Our vets tell us that it is not a "sure" thing, but it will slow down the venom so you have more time to reach a vet for treatment.
While it is further away, we have all of the dog's shots done in El Centro----a LOT cheaper than in San Diego.
I know some dogs survive with nothing, and I know of a few that did not survive.

Vaccination retards the effects of the snake venom, gives you more time to get to the Vet for treatment.
Our Lab received one initial shot, then a booster every year.

I'm thinking anti-venom is a rare commodity down here. My vet in Ensenada is extensivly well trained and highly respected by his peers in the
community and he doesn't have it. So, why bother with a vaccination?

I just got the vaccine in Feb. for my dog, it was 2 shots 28 days apart. And cheap at $14 each. Also did the rattlesnake avoidance training on my way
to Baja with the company that's link is posted. They were doing a clinic at a dog park in Camarillo and I just stopped did it and kept on going, took
about 10 minutes. Not sure it worked that well as walking up from Avila Beach 2 weeks ago a snake, not a rattlesnake, was crossing the ramp and my dog
didn't avoid it but didn't go after it either. She definitely needs the refresher before my next trip down.

Most dogs that are snake-bit get it right on the end of the nose. Easy to understand why.

Yeah, the first snake the handler showed her she just stood next to it and didn't even notice it and he kept pointing it out and after about 8 or 10
seconds she saw it and just put her nose right down and touched it.
