3 Lane Shut Down at San Ysidro Border

If it wasn't bad enough 3 lanes will be shut down at a time for a few days each until construction is finished.

That will back it up for a long time.

Bring a lunch and a porta poddy.

Sentri? Ya baby

Soulpatch,

I must have been just in front of you. Started the line at 10:35 AM got to the gate at 12:40 PM and was promptly sent to secondary, (With my trailer behind the truck camper I can not exit the standard way because of the barricades). However, only in secondary this time for eight minutes, the dogs were very happy to see USA ground!.

Otay Ready Lane on Last Thursday, June 16, 1:00 pm

The wait was forty-five minutes.

Lips,
Thanks for the news. Schedule published in this story from the SD Union-Trib

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol has provided a tentative schedule of lane closings. Each set of lanes will close at 10 p.m. and reopen about 30 hours later at 4 a.m. The schedule is subject to construction progress:
June 22-24: two lanes from the west side
June 24-26: three lanes from the west side
June 26-28: three lanes from the west side
June 28-30: three lanes from the west side
June 30-July 2: three lanes from the west side
July 5-7: three lanes near the middle/west
July 7-9: three lanes near the middle/west

I'm doing my best to use "mules" for my San Diego shopping needs. The wait times and other factors should keep things very quiet here in Ensenada.

I think my next crossing will be at Lukeville. Never more than three cars a head of me.

One of the big problems will be that if you don't know which lanes are closed and you get into a closed one then you are going to have to get into one of the open lanes, IF YOU FIND SOMEONE TO LET YOU IN!!!!!!!!

That is one of the biggest things that really peees me off. No one lets you in if you have to change lanes unless you are an extremely good looking woman and provide a flash.

Good luck with that!

I don't understand why more people don't take an alternate crossing. As one poster said, "would you rather SIT in traffic for 1-2 hours, or drive 1-2 hours". Personally, I'd rather drive, so will check them all out after we move to Baja.

No sheit. That last 200 yards before the gate brings out the very worst in people, but it goes both ways at times. Giving a driver room to change lanes to a position in front of you in effect creates a new lane of traffic because those behind him won't allow you back into the flow of traffic.
It's just a "dog eat dog" zone and to see a common courtesy extended really stands out from the norm.
I just don't go that way. It's like volunteering to be flushed down the crapper.

I crossed at Tecate after hearing on the radio that San Ysidro was close to three hour wait early Monday morning. Fifteen minutes to cross, but it took close to an hour of hard driving on narrow, curvy, country roads following slow semis and getting through the immigration checkpoint to get to El Cajon. Don't know whats worst on my nerves, waiting in line or those country roads.

P.S. I was heading up from Ensenada

Just crossed this morning at about 9:20 and all the lanes were not backed up at all but at that time it usually is pretty good. I crossed through Sentri which was only 10 minutes. As I got five cars from crossing some stupid bonehead drove right through when he got to the guard at one of the regular lanes. Over the loud speaker I heard "Runner at gate 22". All the inspectors who had dogs and the inspectors walking around the where the cars were in line spread out immediately and thats when the fun started. Every car was searched. Hoods were up as well as the trunks and the dogs were out there in force. What happens is when there is a "Runner" these boneheads think all the guards will be only watching him but that is not the case anymore. All the cars are searched. I had to do the drill but was not asked to go into secondary. I saw the runner in handcuffs being led away and his car was blocked by other cars attempting to leave the area. There was no where for him to go. What a fool and it was a nice Explorer. Probably stolen.

I do hate that crossing.

Hard to have sympathy. Afterall you were in Baja for weeks while we were not.;D
You do get a free pass though because of the little ones.:saint:

I do recall when Nixon had 'operation intercept' back in the day. We would keep extra coffee cans and other various large containers in the vehicle for the three hour border waits. My older siblings tagged me 'micro bladder'.

When we cross with camper on truck we can not use Sentri so we have tried all the various routes and it seems if you track time spent from Ensenada to home it tends to come out about the same. Only difference is time spent moving v. sitting, curvy v. straight road, scenery v. people watching. It's all part of the adventure, no?:dudette:

It is an interesting study in human psychology. Mostly stress free for me thanks to the F-250 4x4. Crossing south at 5:00 PM on a Friday is always a hoot, too.
