meet Joaquin and THE CACTUS RESTAURANT in La Bocana

Joaquin only opens when you make a reservation (615 156-60041) and only in the evenings (usually) .... the menu is whatever he has that day: fish or sashimi or lobster or oysters or cayo de acho (sp) and often a combo of the foods I mentioned.

He and his brother (Juanchys=fishing captain) and cousin (Domingo=fishing captain) are great guys.

I thought I'd give those of you who know them some pics to remember them by and trust me, if you haven't met them, you are mssing out on having the honor of meeting some very nice guys ....

Thanks Blanca! That was one fine meal:

Callo sashimi
Ensalada con queso fresco
Lenguada Empanizada (plate after plate after plate)
Callo empanizada

Joaquin is an abalone diver and a real character (mucho take it easy)

A real nice experience. (thats me on the porch with 2 other Nomads)

Cheers, Curt

I don't see Les or you with the microphone singing. Wow a big screen. Make sure Joaquin gets the NFL network up and running before we come.

hahaha you can't see me but I am definitely singing loudly ! we did a mix of mexican and american and even brazilian songs ... it was so fun ... and the cousins who brought the mike and guitars were THE BEST. they were having a wonderful time. there was a dad and son on their first road trip - dad at 77 I think, and son in his 40's maybe - Joe Sr and Joe Jr, what a duo !! Dad even took his shirt off to dance - ummm - that'll be a picture for another day. the dad had so much positive energy. an absolutely superb human.

now, the cousins wrote an article for WON magazine and they brought a copy for Joaquin - it is all about la bocana and the great fishing they had the last time they came to town. it is now on the counter, near the "lady" on the wall in the first photo of the second set I put up.

what a night. food. good folk. music. wine. beer. tequila. and more.

the stories these 2 tell are something else ..when they were really little and life was tough, they would lick banana peels that others threw away. they did not have enough money to buy bananas ....

jaunchys dream was to study art but his family could not afford it. actually, that brings up another point - his wife just kicked him out of the livingroom with his drawing board. he told me that he would like to build a new studio outside his house. he reckons he needs 5000 bricks to do this....anyone interested in starting up a JUANCHY STUDIO fund ? and we can surprise him ? each brick costs 10 pesos ...

I will try to get an estimate from a builder as to total cost .....
